About Us: AFSCME 1624 is the Austin Local of AFSCME International. AFSCME Local 1624 represents county and city employees of Austin/Travis County.

Job Description: As a Union Organizer/Comms, you will be at the forefront of building and mobilizing a strong union presence within our workforce. Your role will involve engaging with employees, building solidarity, and recruiting members.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Outreach and Recruitment: Identify and engage with employees who are interested in joining our union. Conduct outreach efforts both inside and outside the workplace to build support and recruit new members.
  • Communication: Draft and design leaflets, newsletters, social network content, blogs, online campaigns, and any other relevant communications.
  • Education and Training: Provide information and education to employees about their rights, the benefits of union membership, and the unionization process. Conduct training sessions, workshops, and one-on-one meetings to empower workers and potential members and build solidarity.
  • Campaign Planning: Develop and implement strategic organizing campaigns to address workplace issues, achieve unionization goals and increase union membership. Collaborate with employees, union leadership, and community allies to develop effective campaign strategies.
  • Mobilization: Mobilize employees to take collective action, such as signing union authorization cards, participating in rallies and protests, and engaging in other forms of activism. Foster a sense of solidarity and unity among workers to strengthen the union's bargaining power.
  • Coalition Building: Build alliances with community organizations, labor groups, and other stakeholders to support unionization efforts and advance common goals. Leverage external support to amplify the voices of workers and pressure employers to support the goals of the union.
  • Negotiation Support: Provide support and assistance during worker negotiations, including gathering input from members, drafting proposals, and mobilizing support for union demands. Advocate for fair and equitable contracts that address the needs of workers.
  • Documentation and Cultivation: Maintaining worker and member lists. Identifying and help developing worker-leaders.
  • Member Engagement: Foster active participation and involvement among union members through regular communication, meetings, and member-led initiatives. Attend worksite visits.’
  • Other Matters: Perform any other task as assigned by the Business Manager.

Qualifications Preferences:

  • Bachelor's degree.
  • Previous experience in community organizing, labor organizing, or related activism.
  • Strong interpersonal, communication, and persuasion skills.
  • Passion for social justice, workers' rights, and grassroots organizing.
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively in a dynamic, fast-paced environment.
  • Familiarity with labor laws, union organizing tactics, and campaign strategies.
  • Commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion in organizing efforts.
  • Strong oral and written communication skills and an ability to speak in public settings.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite and other relevant software applications.
  • Willingness to work irregular hours and travel as needed.
