Associate Director

Occupational Health and Safety Specialist

Based in Canton, MA

General Description:
The Associate Director, in collaboration with the Director of Nursing, shall be responsible for carrying out the activities of the Association related to safety and health including the planning, development, implementation and evaluation of the occupational health and safety program for the Association and its members.

Accountable to the Director of Division of Nursing.


  1. Provide staff expertise to MNA structural units and local bargaining units in carrying out the goals of the Association by:
    • Identifying and analyzing the research, policy and workplace trends in the field of occupational health and safety as it impacts nurses in the workplace.
    • Planning and implementing educational programs on occupational health and safety issues.
    • In coordination with the Public Communications Division, responds to the media on issues related to occupational health and safety.
    • Disseminating information on occupational safety and health that includes policies, materials and products to members through publications and education.
    • Maintaining library of occupational health and safety materials for members to use.
    • In conjunction with the Labor Division, provides support to members through consultations, onsite safety assessment visits and recommendations for occupational health and safety improvements, including recommendations to employers.
    • Obtaining funding for occupational health and safety programs through grant activities when possible.
    • Articulate MNA policy and goals related to occupational health and safety issues to members and the public.
    • Consulting on policies related to occupational health and safety with federal and state policy making groups in conjunction with the Legislation and Governmental Affairs Division.
    • Developing, implementing and evaluating individual (own) objectives to ensure continued professional growth. Utilize time allocated for professional development to undertake activities necessary to achieve and maintain recognition as an authority in this specialized area of practice.
    • Conducting other activities as requested by the Director of the Division of Nursing.
  2. Maintains positive interdepartmental and intradepartmental communications.
  3. Participates in MNA staff meetings, serves on staff committees as requested and submits activity reports in a timely manner.
  4. Participates and assists the Board of Directors as assigned by the Director.
  5. Assists and participates in MNA Conventions.
  6. Acts as a resource on all MNA programs and activities.
  7. Keeps informed of occupational Health and Safety trends, OSHA and NIOSH decisions, especially those affecting the health care industry.
  8. Testifies on proposed legislation involving health and safety issues as requested by the Director and/or Division of Legislation.


  1. Minimum two years’ experience in Occupational Health and Safety.
  2. Massachusetts RN License preferred.
  3. Advanced Degree in related field.
  4. Certification in Occupational Health Nursing.
  5. Experience in workplace consultation and in education program planning and implementation.
  6. Experience in labor negotiations related to workplace health and safety preferred.
