Field Representative


Minnesota School Employees Association is seeking an experienced Field Representative to work directly with union members throughout Minnesota.
MSEA is an independent union of nearly 7,000+ classified school employees from over 70 school districts in Minnesota. MSEA members are secretaries, paraeducators, food service employees, technicians, custodians, interpreters, nurses and bus drivers.

Job Description 
The MSEA Field Representative is responsible for performing a multitude of duties that provide services to MSEA members, including matters related to the negotiations and maintenance of public sector labor agreements. The Field Representative empowers and advocates for all members, working in tandem with the organization to uphold MSEA’s mission.

Job Duties

  • Lead in contract negotiations and enforcement/administration of collective bargaining agreements, including advising and representing members in contract grievances and arbitrations, and attending to other labor relation concerns.
  • Develop and maintain a productive and informed relationship and rapport with members.
  • Assist with efforts to increase member involvement at the local, regional and state levels and attain 100% membership.
  • Stay current on relevant laws, bargaining trends, organizing conditions and other matters relating to labor relations and terms and conditions of employment.
  • Communicate pertinent information as appropriate and necessary to keep members informed.
  • Deliver training to members and leaders on topics relevant to their current needs.


  • High school diploma and at least 2 years’ experience in a union environment.
  • Basic knowledge of PERLA, other applicable labor laws, union elections, governance structures, duties and practices.
  • Effective oral and written communication skills, including public relations skills.
  • Experience organizing and prioritizing work duties with limited supervision.
  • Ability to conduct research and gather information to evaluate issues and proposals.
  • Ability to lead the collective bargaining process.
  • Experience as an advocate on member rights and contractual issues.
  • Ability to educate, train, lead and motivate members.
  • Ability to exercise independent judgment as the situation requires.
  • Ability to work under pressures of time and member needs.
  • Ability to manage conflict professionally and effectively with the motivation to work cooperatively and collaboratively with others.
  • Experience preparing and presenting grievance arbitrations preferred.

Other Requirements

  • Excellent communication skills.
  • Ability to flex schedule to work some nights and weekends.
  • Valid driver’s license.
