Job Description: The Research Analyst supports the strategic direction of the organization and provides research support for both internal bargaining and external organizing drives. The Research Analyst should have at least five years of related experience in the field, and must have broad knowledge and expertise of all pertinent databases and sources, and experience in research campaign strategy, tactics and hits. The Research Analyst must be able to work within a team and communicate with rank and file members and staff members in various leadership capacities.

Specifically, the Research Analyst must have advanced writing skills to produce a white paper, analytical skills to read financial statements, technological skills to manipulate data on spreadsheets and databases, conduct power analyses and identify leverage points. The Research Analyst should also be able to participate in research-related trainings, identify growth opportunities for the Union, and be able to leverage his/her body of historical relationships.

Desired qualifications are high-level research and bargaining related (costing, etc.) experience, knowledge of the practices, processes, systems and players in the healthcare industry, and familiarity with the Los Angeles area union movement.

The Research Analyst is responsible for supporting the Union’s strategic plan, supporting research projects, providing research support in contract bargaining, assessing the financial health of companies, producing reports, white papers, or memos for diverse audiences and following health care discourse.

Responsibilities:

  • The Research Analyst supports the Union’s bargaining and organizing campaigns.
  • The Research Analyst works with the Union’s Chief Negotiators to provide research and costing support for bargaining; track and report on hospital industry trends, dissect hospital budgets, and analyze financial reports, as well as health insurance plans (e.g., actuarial values).
  • The Research Analyst also supports the Union’s organizing staff in performing in-depth research using a variety of sources, analyzing and interpreting industry, regulatory and financial data, and working with Union staff to identify and provide strategic research campaign options.

Qualifications:

  • The Research Analyst should have a strong commitment to progressive social change
  • Have 5 years of progressive related research experience
  • A BA or higher in economics, policy, finance, public administration or social science
  • Strong technical research and quantitative skills
  • Excellent writing ability and analytical skills
  • People skills and experience with Excel, Access and other databases or a combination of demonstrable equivalent skills and experience.

The ideal candidate will have experience building contract costing models preparing analyses of health care and retirement benefit plans and an understanding of the Affordable Care Act.
