Construction Market Representative / Business Development

Based in Lansing, MI

Position Summary: the Construction Market Representative leads community outreach programs and coordinates volunteer efforts, financial contributions, and other initiatives designed to increase market share for LIUNA members and its signatory contractors, assists in the tracking of legislation and educates community-based organizations, local and state officials about issues affecting Michigan's skilled trades construction industry, monitors state boards and agencies, tracks construction projects across Michigan, and is responsible for the drafting of media and other public relations materials.

Qualifications: The desired candidate is an independent thinker, brings new ideas to the table, is self-motivated, and finds work that needs to be done. This person must be dedicated to building a strong labor union, promote the welfare of the membership, and advancing the interests of all construction workers in Michigan.

  • Create compelling and engaging communications content that inspires, informs, and educates the general public, elected officials, and other community leaders about LIUNA's key issues
  • Be responsible for news media materials, including, op-eds, news, releases, talking points, fact sheets, and other written materials as assigned
  • Provide research and analysis on key issues and initiatives that impact LIUNA and the construction industry as a whole, and be able to relate complex data to all levels of audiences
  • Assist in the management of social media platforms including but not limited to: Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, and mass email platforms
  • Work with individual Locals to coordinate and process financial donations to support local community nonprofits and other organizations/events.
  • Is comfortable regularly interacting with leadership of large commercial contractors, associations, and other private sector companies
  • Manage databases used by Locals and contractors to tracks construction projects

The successful applicant must have relevant work experience with preference given to applicants with: demonstrated knowledge of communications, public relations, public policy making process, and labor unions; demonstrated ability to work independently and in a team setting; demonstrated superior communication and problem-solving skills; and knowledge of working with media outlets. Applicant should possess at least a bachelor's degree and come with relevant work experience (preferably in a union, public sector, community-based, or social justice organization). The ideal candidate will have at least 5 years of experience working with the media, elected officials and the public policy making process, and community groups; the candidate must have an organizing mindset, as our ultimate goal is to build the LIUNA brand, grow our membership and create longevity for our members.

Salary & Benefits:

  • Salary dependent upon qualifications and experience. Range is $65,000 to $80,000 Annually.
