Job Description:  The Growth Department works on growing the number of members in our union and in broader labor movement, on developing new forms of worker organization and power, and on building a workers’ movement for the 21st Century.  The Deputy Director is responsible for managing the field team of the Growth Department and for overseeing multiple campaigns of the Department at any given time.

Core Job Responsibilities - Include But Are Not Limited To The Following:

  • Directly supervises 7 employees. Carries out supervisory responsibilities in accordance with the organization's policies and applicable laws. Responsibilities include:
  • Interviewing, hiring, and training employees
  • Planning, assigning, and directing work
  • Appraising performance
  • Rewarding and disciplining employees
  • Addressing complaints and resolving problems
  • Roles and responsibilities include, but are not limited to the following:
  • Managing the field organizers in the Growth Department
  • Overseeing multiple organizing, political, and/or policy campaigns at any given time
  • Managing the data of the Growth Department and reporting on progress as requested
  • Coordination with other departments within the union on major projects
  • Coordination with other unions’ and other organizations’ field directors on joint campaigns

Education and Experience

  • 6 years’ experience leading organizing campaigns
  • Experience with a labor union or other progressive-minded non-profit
  • Demonstrated commitment to the labor movement’s goals and values, and an understanding of key labor-union concepts
  • Ability to work well in a fast-paced, dynamic “campaign” environment
  • Leadership skills that include team building, coaching, problem analysis, and conflict resolution, and have strong skills in systems development and management. 
  • Bachelor’s Degree or Higher
