Job Summary
The Oregon Nurses Association (ONA) is searching for a skilled communications specialist to help develop, share and promote our stories and messages to ONA members and the public. Successful candidates will be strong, versatile writers and communicators who are able to quickly translate complex information to ONA members, staff, media and the public using print and digital media platforms.

The Communications Specialist will be responsible for assisting with the daily operations of the Communications department including creating and promoting new print and digital communications, social media management, association marketing, basic email and website maintenance, media outreach and working together with ONA staff and members to design and implement effective communication plans.

Essential Functions

Communications

  • Creates, edits and posts text and multimedia content to websites and social media platforms
  • Writes and distributes regular content for ONA emails, websites, social media, newsletters and other platforms.
  • Creates various print materials including newsletters, fliers, posters, postcards, white papers, and pamphlets.
  • Helps update and maintain ONA’s website, email marketing system, media monitoring system, text messaging programs, social media management programs, social media profiles and other digital content.
  • Works with ONA members and staff to identify and publicize stories around ONA activities.
  • Analyzes statistics and data to determine communications’ effectiveness and member needs.
  • Ensures all communications meet ONA brand standards and style guidelines.

Marketing and Public Relations

  • Work with members and staff to plan, promote, and implement or coordinate various association-wide activities (e.g. community outreach, media/public relations functions, etc.)
  • Works closely with the Member Services department to develop and implement member recruitment and retention strategies.
  • Writes, edits and distributes talking points, press releases and media advisories.
  • Acts as a point of contact for media inquiries

Member and Staff Support

  • Coordinates message development between departments.
  • Attends meetings and events as needed.
  • Performs other work and assignments as directed from the Communications Director, Digital Communications Specialist, Chief Operating Officer, Chief Executive Officer or other members of the Executive Team.

Education Required:
Graduate from an accredited college or university with a bachelor’s degree in communications, journalism, marketing, public relations or a related field.

Years/Months of Experience in related field:
A minimum of three years’ relevant experience in a corporate or non-profit environment; or the equivalent combination of education and experience.

  1. Experience writing, creating and publishing content for print, digital and social media.
  2. Ability to design both print and web materials.
  3. Strong knowledge of communications and public relations principles.
  4. Prior experience in communications, marketing, media, design, or public relations in a labor union, non-profit or health care environment is preferred.

Technical Requirements
Proficient in MS Office: Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Publisher, etc. and Adobe Creative Suite: InDesign, Photoshop; as well as social media management tools, basic website content management systems, email marketing systems; Must be familiar with databases and basic office equipment.

  • Dependability: Must be able to prioritize work and set and meet realistic deadlines. Must be able to meet member needs in a timely fashion. Must notify appropriate staff of problems or delays in completing work responsibilities. Must be able to follow through and work on projects with minimal supervision. Must keep supervisor apprised of availability and work schedule, and follow ONA policies for reporting illness, emergencies, time card and Beck record submission.
  • Performs other duties as assigned or needed.

Typical Physical Activity

  • Physical Activity: Primarily office activities.
  • Physical requirements/demands: Must be able to sit for prolonged periods of time in an office environment. Must be able to type. Must be able to periodically walk up to 100 feet and lift up to 40 lbs.
  • Visual requirements: Must be able to read a computer screen and written documents. Must be able to be able to see well enough to drive safely during daylight and nighttime conditions.

Travel Requirements/Driver’s License
Periodic travel will be required along with occasional evening or weekend work. The position requires a valid Oregon driver’s license and a reliable automobile.
