Ohio Federation of Teachers (OFT), Local 8033 is a statewide union representing teachers, paraprofessionals, other professionals and more.

The Ohio Federation of Teachers is posting for a state Community Learning Center Organizer to work with OFT and our affiliates and community partners to facilitate the expansion of Community Learning Centers in districts where OFT organizes school employees.

OFT staff are subject to assignments throughout the state based on the needs of the union. This position will be Columbus-based and will require significant travel to other parts of Ohio.

The OFT Community Learning Center Organizer will be responsible for helping the leadership of OFT to develop and sustain a network of organizations and individuals working to expand Community Learning Centers in Ohio. The Community Learning Center Organizer will also work with OFT affiliates who are engaged in promoting, designing, and implementing Community Learning Centers in their school districts. This work will require collaboration with local leaders and members. The Organizer will support the work of local leaders to engage partners and school district leaders, plan and implement strong Community Learning Center projects, involve OFT members directly in this work, and strengthen the role of the union in leading Community Learning Center work in the school districts where we operate.

Specific job duties include:
State Level:

  • Participate in any existing coalitions working on Community Learning Centers and potentially facilitate the creation of a new network with voluntary leadership structure, build a master list of Coalition partners that is diverse and inclusive, and coordinate regular meetings
  • Create a one-year plan for the Coalition including meetings, events, decision-points, and common messaging for Community Learning Centers
  • Work with Coalition leadership to leverage funding to support Community Learning Center efforts
  • Facilitate the creation of a clearinghouse for peer learning so that the Community Learning Centers community can share best practices/tools/challenges/opportunities/general information
  • Connect with and participate in partner events (e.g. state level association conferences and meetings) to help promote and educate on the Community Learning Centers agenda
  • Facilitate conversations/connections between peer groups across the state: union leader to union leader/mayor to mayor, superintendent to superintendent, teacher to teacher, etc.
  • Work with the OFT legislative team on Community Learning Center policy and legislation
  • Work with the AFT national Community Schools staff

Local/Regional Level:

  • Work with local union leaders, along with school district and community partners, to organize and support teams of union and community leaders to engaged in and advocate for Community Learning Centers
  • Identify and train leaders in OFT locals around the Community Learning Centers work and agenda
  • Work with local leaders to build local union capacity in the areas of: engaging members in Community Learning Centers; working with community partners; incorporating professional development; developing communications strategies; identifying funding, resources and technical assistance needed to support Community Learning Centers in their school district
  • Maintaining liaison with state and national staff


  • Substantial experience organizing (union/community/non-profit) and conducting organizing campaigns
  • Knowledge of public education, the Community Learning Centers movement, public school policy
  • Experience in coalition building, collaboration (across sectors) and partner development
  • Experience building leadership systems and implementing leadership development
  • Proven ability to make persuasive written and oral presentations
  • Highly organized and self-motivated
  • Working knowledge of OFT, labor unions, and coalitions in which OFT participates
  • Must own car, carry automobile insurance, and be willing to drive for work

Please Note: This position is grant funded. The duration of the grant is one year, with a probable second year extension. Applicants should be aware that after two years, the funding for this position will cease.

Salary commensurate with experience
