32BJ SEIU is one of the largest and most dynamic labor unions in the United States, with 163,000 members in eleven states and Washington, DC. The Union is at the forefront of driving a progressive policy agenda, including living and prevailing wage laws, responsible procurement and development standards, and access to quality health care.

We currently seek a Staff Director (SD) for our New Jersey District, based in Newark. This is a new management position, aimed at supporting the District Vice President in realizing program goals. The SD will directly supervise key staff, as well as assist in managing the New Jersey District. The SD must be a strong manager, facilitator and communicator, who can gain buy-in and cooperation across departments and at all levels of employment.

Responsibilities include:

  • Ensure effective coordination and communication among departments (Organizing, Political, Research and Communications with the NJ Field and Grievance Representation teams), including mobilization of members to support Organizing and Political work;
  • On behalf of the District Vice President, interface with NY headquarters staff in Accounting, Human Resources, Info Technology, Office Services and Legal;
  • Drive annual planning and budget process;
  • Lead and/or participate in strategic planning;
  • Coordinate annual Performance Evaluation process for all District staff;
  • Working with hiring managers, ensure that new staff are properly on-boarded, having the tools and information they need to succeed;
  • Supervise three Lead members of the NJ Representation team;
  • Supervise the Office Manager;
  • Educate staff and enforce the administrative policies of the Union;
  • Other duties as assigned.

Qualifications include:

  • Relevant management experience, including leading and motivating work groups, performance management and budgeting/planning;
  • Union experience is preferred but not required;
  • Experience and-or interest in workers’ rights and social justice preferred;
  • Excellent communication skills, written and oral;
  • Strong listening and facilitation skills;
  • Experience working with staff at all levels;
  • Experience designing and implementing workflow systems;
  • Ability to balance multiple projects while working in a demanding environment;
  • Bi-lingual English/Spanish skills preferred.
