The Sustainable Port Chester Alliance is a coalition of faith, civic, and labor organizations and community members founded in 2015. We build power to secure responsible development, affordable housing, and good jobs, and to safeguard human and civil rights in Port Chester, NY.

The Alliance seeks an energetic full-time Community Organizer to build and strengthen our infrastructure, expand our grassroots base, develop community leaders, and organize these forces into powerful campaigns.

This is an exciting time for the Alliance, as we’re building real power in Port Chester, with major recent victories such as helping our volunteer executive director win election to Port Chester’s legislative body. The community organizer position is a unique opportunity to help grow and shape a true community-labor alliance that is organizing for economic, racial and immigrant justice.

About Port Chester
Although Port Chester is surrounded by some of the wealthiest communities in the country, its 29,000 residents are largely working class. 60% of the population is of Latinx descent. The community is known for its thriving restaurant and cultural scene built by recent immigrants. But a wave of new real estate development coming to the village threatens to displace working families, primarily people of color, and exacerbate the proliferation of worker exploitation and low-wage construction work. The Alliance is organizing for development to create affordable housing priced for current Port Chester residents, good jobs for local residents that lead to careers in the construction industry, public space and other community benefits.

KEY JOB RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Work closely with the Executive Director, Coordinating Committee, and Board of Directors
  • Office administration and coordination.
  • Conduct broad and intensive outreach to various communities in Port Chester.
  • Coordinate campaigns and execute popular education programs and mobilization.
  • Identify and develop new leaders.
  • Initiate, develop and maintain relations with key local organizations, leaders and activists.
  • Interface with labor unions, community-based organizations, and social justice movements in the immediate area and throughout Westchester County.
  • Coordinate social media.
  • Develop and distribute regular meeting notices, agendas and minutes.
  • Other duties as assigned.

JOB REQUIREMENTS & QUALIFICATIONS

  • Fluency, if not high proficiency, in English and Spanish.
  • Previous experience in union or community organizing.
  • Experience in office management.
  • A demonstrated commitment to social justice.
  • Capacity to work independently and with a team.
  • The ability to make and follow through on a work plan.
  • Willingness to work irregular hours, including nights and weekends.
  • The ability to work with people from diverse backgrounds.
  • Good communications skills and proficiency in social media.
  • Strong interpersonal skills.
  • Basic writing and computer skills.
  • Familiarity with Port Chester and/or Westchester County preferred.

COMPENSATION
Compensation is $50,000 per year (negotiable) plus benefits to be determined.
