Executive Director

The Executive Director is a highly-qualified, healthcare advocate, labor leader, and spokesperson who excels in providing expert support and vision to high-performing managers and teams as well as all aspects of internal operations. The Executive Director will work with statewide leadership to champion five (5) strategic imperatives: growing the membership, building financial security, supporting our people and culture, strengthening our visibility and influence, and organizing our members.

The Oregon Nurses Association (ONA) has a proud 115-year history leading the way for nurses and patients and making a difference in nursing practice, politics and labor. The ONA is looking for an Executive Director to build on the accomplishments of the past and help lead the organization as a champion for health care and nursing standards, and promoting professional development of nurses using innovative 21st century models of organizing.

ONA proudly represents approximately 15,000 union members, professional association members, and student affiliate members across Oregon. ONA administers 50 collective bargaining agreements across the state and represents both public and private sector employees at mostly acute care hospital facilities. ONA is affiliated with the American Nurses Association (ANA), American Federation of Teachers (AFT), and the AFL-CIO. The Executive Director role is the highest-level administrator position at ONA and reports directly to the Elected President and Board of Directors.

Based at headquarters in Tualatin, OR, a nearby suburb of Portland, we are looking for a leader who is equipped to manage the four tracks of work: Serve as the voice of the membership, oversee administration and operations, navigate financial stability and champion program implementation.

The ONA is a member-driven, union with statewide presence and numbers, that has worked for several years to put the people and processes in place to position itself for an exciting future. We have an active and educated Board of Directors, an informed and engaged membership, and identified opportunities to internally and externally organize.

Communication challenges and previous leadership actions require an experienced, motivational, visionary leader to strengthen relationship, update protocols, and build trust and buy-in.

Scope of Responsibilities

The Executive Director will:

  • Oversee, set expectations and pace for the vision, direction, culture and decision-making of union;
  • Assist the ONA Board of Directors in their strategic planning process;
  • Manage an operating budget of $8M;
  • Supervise seven (7) direct reports, with an overall staff of about 50 employees;
  • Provide day-to-day direction, guidance, training, and supervision for ONA staff operating at HQ and throughout the state;
  • Serve as union’s spokesperson in internal and external capacities;
  • Oversee the necessary administrative and operational functions are created, supported, and maintained;
  • Oversee ONA’s financial welfare and oversight;
  • Responsible for ONA buildings and property;
  • Work closely with the directors, and have understanding of the ONA Programs: professional services, labor, government relations;
  • Oversee new organizing, contract negotiation, collective bargaining enforcement, internal organizing;
  • Serve as lead representative for lobbying and representing the ONA in coalition-efforts;
  • Serve as liaison to affiliate organizations

Minimum Qualifications

  • Familiarity with health care industry and passion for and advocacy of nursing profession; RN experience preferred.
  • Minimum of five-years senior-level management experience;
  • Deep understanding of unions, their legal requirements, and passion for the labor movement;
  • Demonstrated experience with internal and external organizing programs;
  • High capacity for managing multiple projects;
  • Excellent listening skills, emotional intelligence, interpersonal and problem-solving abilities;
  • Extensive experience supervising, mentoring, training staff (and/or implementing training programs);
  • Knowledge of collective bargaining, contract administration, labor law, and proven track-record implementing organizing model;
  • Strong oral and written communication skills, and has served as lead spokesperson;
  • Extensive experience with union budgets and fiscal oversight;
  • Extensive lobbying experience;
  • Strong commitment to inclusive environments;
  • Travel requirements: periodic state and national travel is required. The position requires a valid Oregon driver’s license and automobile.

Salary and Benefits

  • ONA offers an annual salary in the range of $170,000 - $195,000

There is an exceptional benefits package including employer paid medical, dental, vision, long and short-term disability, life insurance, 401(k) employer match of up to 11% to IBT managed fund. Plus, annually: 5 weeks’ vacation, 8 personal days, 2 weeks sick time.
