Deputy Political Director

Based in Washington, DC

The Deputy Political Director assists the National Political Director in overseeing the electoral support of our national political program. The position works with canvass leaders to develop and implement political strategy, and help meet membership recruitment, electoral and canvass leadership development goals. The Deputy Political Director will work with the National Political Director to assist with Regional Director duties as needed. This position is fixed term with an expected end date of December 11, 2020.

Reports to: National Political Director


  • Support National Political Director in all aspects of daily management of Working America political operations to include oversight and supervision of political team;
  • Work with Campaign and Field staff to ensure that membership recruitment and other canvass and organizational goals are met;
  • Work with Campaign and Field staff and local allies to integrate the work of the canvass into the political and issue mobilization program;
  • Effectively recommend on hiring, promoting, discharging, disciplining, evaluating and participating in grievance handling for political team;
  • Collaborate with key stakeholders, attend meetings and other activities to represent the interests of Working America within the State Federation and local labor councils, AFL-CIO affiliates and allied organizations;
  • Develop relationships and interact with elected officials, candidates, and staff regarding Working America priorities, and provide guidance to Working America staff on interactions at national and state level;
  • Plan and oversee issue campaigns, maintain political contacts, and participate in developing large donor fundraising opportunities to support the political work of Working America;
  • Assist the National Political Director with political strategy development and the development and maintenance of electoral and voter targeting, analytical and evaluative systems;
  • Oversee and conduct research on legislative, policy and campaign issues, and monitor developments;
  • Oversee the management of campaign literature system, to include oversight of staff responsible for research, documents, tracking, proofing, printing and approval.
  • Build reports in Excel, Access and other similar databases;
  • Regional Director duties as needed;
  • Supervise special field and political projects as needed;
  • Other duties as assigned.


  • Minimum 5 or more years’ experience with political field work
  • Minimum 5 or more years' experience in electoral, labor or progressive politics
  • Leadership, team-building and strategic planning ability
  • Knowledge of national and local structures of the labor movement
  • Ability to effectively execute and direct GOTV operations
  • Experience in strategic planning of field operations including NCEC targeting, data collection, coordinating with other groups
  • Ability to work independently in politically sensitive and high-pressure environments
  • Excellent problem-solving and relational skills
  • Demonstrated research and writing skills covering a variety of topics and formats, as well as solid verbal communications capacity required;
  • Track record of work with databases, including VAN, NGP and/or other similar systems required;
  • Experience with evidence based electoral analytics and research;
  • Familiarity with Congressional and/or state legislative process, and research resources strongly preferred;
  • Willingness and ability to quickly learn new skills related to job duties;
  • Organized and detail oriented;
  • Calm under pressure;
  • Work well as part of a team in a multi-tasking, detail and deadline oriented environment, as well as willingness to seek assistance/clarification whenever necessary;
  • Experience with independent expenditure campaigns a plus;
  • Computer proficiency and strong written and verbal communication skills
  • Ability to travel on a regular basis as needed
  • Must be able to work irregular and long hours

Starting salary is $93,000. Includes medical insurance and 401(k) with employer contribution.
