Job Description:
The goal of the Member Resource Center is to provide consistent, reliable member services, handling fluctuating call volumes and occasional member drop-ins. Representatives answer and respond to incoming calls and email. This position handles questions about membership/dues, health care and other benefits, collective bargaining agreements, problems at work, and union activities. The MRC Specialist also provides information and assistance including advocacy and contract enforcement. Representatives work closely with union members, officers, staff, and leaders to communicate about union programs and current issues.

This position will also include organizing support, with duties that may include correspondence, reports, contract proposals, arbitration and fact-finding reports. Other tasks may include: prepare and complete nomination and ballot packets for mailing to membership when elections occur; compose letters and reports not requiring extensive knowledge of technical program detail, including determining formats, modes of address, etc., for letters and reports; proofread and apply knowledge of grammar; perform clerical functions like making copies, filing, production of mailers, fliers, and contracts, and setup and support for meetings and actions.

Some specific duties shall include:

  • Provide consistent, reliable member services through a small call center environment with fluctuating call volumes
  • Screen and direct walk-ins and calls; provide general information; take clear, concise messages, answer contract questions and provide basic contract interpretation for members/stewards
  • Identify potential worksite leaders;
  • Provide clerical support for contract bargaining
  • ID members with potential to support our union’s political program and our union’s external organizing program
  • Translation of written materials
  • Clerical functions: copies, production of mailers, fliers and contracts as outlined above


  • Passionate dedication to improving the quality of life of working people and enthusiasm to participate in a wide range of activities including external organizing and politics
  • Excellent interpersonal & communication skills, including the ability to successfully relate to people from a wide range of backgrounds and cultures
  • Good communications skills, with excellent customer service/relationship skills and the ability to relate to limited-English speakers
  • Analytical skills necessary to interpret contract language, investigate and process grievances
  • Ability to solve problems creatively, exercise judgment and think on your feet
  • Must be able to perform successfully in both independent and team settings
  • Experience with VAN a plus


  • Experience in political organizing, community organizing and/or call center and customer service experience
  • Able to demonstrate basic computer literacy, basic database use, and ability to learn basics of the services provided by the union and general knowledge of union representation
  • Experience in interpreting/reading contracts preferred
  • Bilingual (Spanish/English)
  • Written translation skills (Spanish/English)
