Lead Organizer

Job Description:
The Michigan Healthcare Project is looking to hire a Lead Organizer for the Detroit area. A lead organizer will report directly to the National Representative and work together on building out the campaign plan. They will be responsible for all aspects of a campaign including one-on-one visits, building relationships with workers, developing issues-based organizing plans, and for recruiting and sustaining motivation of organizing committee members and activists, as well as mentoring staff in performing the above tasks, and offering high level strategic input. Healthcare organizing experience is preferred. This project is a joint venture between the American Federation of Teachers and the Michigan Healthcare Project.


  • A minimum of two years as a union organizer. Significant knowledge of and experience in union organizing is highly required.
  • Demonstrated ability to work independently and achieve goals;
  • Experience in organizing others, building unity among diverse groups and mobilizing others to take action;
  • Ability to carry out goals and meet timelines, while demonstrating a high level of proven leadership and independent judgment within the context of an overall plan and structure;
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Must have experience creating plans and setting goals, and a track record of reaching them.
  • Must have demonstrated leadership abilities and ability to work with a diverse population.
  • Must be an effective communicator with excellent interpersonal and writing skills.
  • Must be competent in computer/web functions, including email, Microsoft Office Suite, databases, google documents, and Excel.
  • Ability to take direction and work well on a team.
  • Must be willing to work long and variable hours, including evenings and weekends.
  • Must be available work on multiple campaigns simultaneously.
  • Proof of a valid driver’s license and insured vehicle required.
  • Mentoring staff and member leaders in all aspects of organizing
  • Overseeing the day-to-day operation of the campaign
  • Evaluating campaign status
  • Providing a high level of strategic input into the direction/calendar of the campaign
  • Lead debriefing of organizing staff
  • Helping motivate organizing staff and member leaders
  • Ability to write and conduct trainings for member leaders and organizing staff
  • Ability to make effective recommendations as to development of campaign calendar.
