The Organization
United Food and Commercial Workers Local 1776 Keystone State is a growing organization with 35,000 current members throughout Pennsylvania and parts of New York, New Jersey, Ohio, and West Virginia. UFCW 1776 Keystone State seeks a Communications Specialist to assist the organization in fulfilling their mission to organize the unorganized, protect workers and their benefits and advance the economic, social and class interests of the membership.

The Position
UFCW 1776KS seeks an energetic self-starter with experience leading multiple projects at a time, keeping multiple people on task and meeting prompt deadlines. The candidate should be well versed in the U.S. Labor Movement and will be responsible for the communication campaigns related to all matters that Local 1776KS is involved with including but not limited to, organizing, servicing, community outreach, political endorsements and so on.


  • Highly organized work practices, initiating and following through on assignments, ability to work under pressure and meet tight deadlines.
  • Knowledge of how to use traditional web and print products as well as telecall and e-mail blasts.
  • Social media experience such as Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, and Tumblr and adaptability to new programs.
  • Knowledge of the labor movement.
  • Photography and basic graphic design skills are a plus.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of communications, public relations, web content management.
  • Demonstrated ability to work independently and in a team setting.
  • Demonstrated superior communication and problem-solving skills.
  • Knowledge of working with local media outlets.
  • At least a bachelor’s degree in journalism or a related field.
  • Relevant work experience (preferably 3-5 years in a union, public sector, community-based or social justice organization setting).
