Legislative Director

Based in Albany, NY

Position Summary:
Assist PEF leadership in the initiation and development of legislative needs and initiatives. Coordinate PEF's lobbying efforts on state and federal levels.


  • At least three years' experience in direct lobbying/political action or in a staff capacity in the New York legislature.
  • Masters Degree in Public Relations, Political Science or a related field is preferred.

Key Functions:

  1. Draft and acquire sponsorship of specific legislation that addresses PEF's needs and initiatives;
  2. Work cooperatively and supportively with the PAC/COPE Chair and the PEF officers under the supervision of the President in establishing:
    • Information briefings with PEF/PAC committee/membership groups;
    • Phone banks/fund raising for political candidates;
    • A written cumulative record of how our state legislators voted on PEF's key legislation;
    • Use of this record as a basis for establishing PEF's distribution of political funds.
  3. Direct, assist and supervise the activities of the PEF lobbyist and support staff;
  4. Work with PEF Political Director on PEF initiatives approved by President;
  5. Report regularly to the PEF officers on the status of PEF legislative issues;
  6. Develop a high visibility of an active PEF legislative department;
  7. Seek coordination and support from NYSUT, AFT, SEIU and the NYS AFL-CIO and ACL-CIO of PEF state and federal legislative issues;
  8. Communicate with the membership, leadership, media and state legislative leaders, as needed, to push the PEF program;
  9. Keep records of all legislative/lobbying expenses, contributions and file all state/federal reporting forms and lobbying activity reports;
  10. Assist local PAC's and committees in the promotion and support of candidates who voice commitment and support of PEF's legislative agenda;
  11. Performs other duties as assigned;
  12. Consistent and reliable attendance.

Salary and Benefits:
Starting salary is $94,654 (may increase based on experience).
