Development and Administrative Assistant

Based in Washington, DC

With 3.5 million members, Working America mobilizes working people who don’t have the benefit of a union at work to fight for good jobs and a fair economy. As the community affiliate of the AFL-CIO, we unite working people in urban and suburban communities around a shared economic agenda.

The Development and Administrative Assistant provides daily development and administrative support to Working America, with particular emphasis on supporting Working America and the Working America Education Fund’s fundraising program.

Reports to: Executive Director

Duties and Responsibilities:
Development Support

  • Support Working America’s and the Working America Education Fund’s current portfolio of donor relationships;
  • Help identify, research and develop, and cultivate a robust portfolio of donors for individual programs and general support; supports the expansion of Working America’s and the Working America Education Fund’s profile with the donor community;
  • Performs data collection and entry, including maintenance of Working America donor database and donor records;
  • Staff fundraising events and meetings;
  • Support election compliance reporting;
  • Help prepare Board communications, materials, reports and presentations; attend local Board meetings, draft, distribute, and maintain Board minutes, and manage governance files;

Administrative Support

  • Provide general administrative support, including but not limited to: answering telephone calls and transcribing messages; data entry and filing; ordering office supplies; assisting with receipt reconciliations; process incoming and outgoing mail as needed; preparing sensitive information for digital scanning, archiving and filing; handling donation requests;
  • Support scheduling, travel, communication and calendar requests as needed;
  • Meeting preparation, execution and related logistics, interacting with internal and external contacts for coordination; develop and maintain relations with these contacts and their administrative staff;
  • Preparation of routine reports including expense reimbursements, credit card reconciliation, and invoices;
  • Track, manage, and prioritize incoming and outgoing requests.
  • Other duties as assigned.


  • 1-2 years’ experience calendar and/or project management;
  • Experience in fundraising development desired but not required.
  • Must respect the importance of managing confidential and sensitive information in the most discreet manner;
  • Positive attitude and excellent written and verbal communication and interpersonal skills;
  • Ability to function independently and as part of a team;
  • Ability to solve practical problems and apply independent judgment;

  • Professional, courteous and tactful in dealing with colleagues, Board members, stakeholders, and the general public and demonstrated ability to exercise good political judgment;

  • Demonstrated experience in taking initiative and maintaining an overview of the content and purpose of the work;
  • Commitment to progressive political change;
  • Ability to work independently and within a team;
  • Excellent problem solving skills;
  • Highly motivated;
  • Ability to work long and irregular hours as required;
  • Proficient knowledge of standard office software, including Google, Microsoft Excel, Word, Power Point, Access and Outlook. Must be comfortable with the internet and using common online resources.
