Senior Organizer

Amalgamated Transit Union (ATU) is currently accepting applications for the position of Senior Organizer. This position can be based in various locations but involves significant field travel, including to International Headquarters in Silver Spring, Maryland. This position will have full-time internal and external organizing responsibilities and report to the Directors of Field Mobilization and New Organizing.

Senior Organizers play a lead role in the development, execution, and analysis of ATU International and Local Union campaigns. They design and lead contract, political action, new organizing, and community organizing campaigns. They may also be asked to offer input and devote time to other union initiatives, including the development of training curriculum, policy research and analysis, and the production of communications materials.

Primary job responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

  • Developing effective mobilization and new organizing campaign plans to protect the integrity of public transit systems and improve the livelihoods of transit workers
  • Evaluating the effectiveness of campaign activities and recommending improvements in strategy and tactics as needed
  • Coordinating campaign-related activities across International departments to ensure effective and efficient deployment of union resources
  • Writing, ghostwriting, and editing leaflets, social media posts, op-eds, white papers, video, etc. to support campaigns and explain them to internal and external audiences
  • Identifying and developing rank-and-file leaders, building committees, engaging in one-on-ones with members or prospective members
  • Training and supporting Organizers and Local Union leaders and activists
  • Building and maintaining coalition partnerships at the national and local levels

Applicants must have:

  • At least 5 years of experience in external or internal union campaigns or grassroots political campaigns
  • A demonstrated commitment to trade unionism, social and economic justice, and equity
  • The ability to inspire and motivate others to action
  • The ability to respectfully work with and relate to people from diverse backgrounds and cultures
  • The ability to navigate complex interpersonal and organizational relationships
  • Ability to work under pressure, independently, with limited supervision, in unfamiliar environments
  • A valid driver's license and the willingness to travel frequently and on short notice
  • Proficiency in using MS Word, Excel, Outlook, Google Docs/Sheets, etc.
  • Willingness to work non-traditional hours with flexibility

Top applicants will also have:

  • Experience supervising 1-3 staff organizers
  • Experience with digital organizing campaigns
  • Proficiency in a language other than English, especially Spanish
  • Familiarity with mass transit, health and safety, or relevant fields
