Senior Labor Organizer

Based in Michigan

 

The Michigan Nurses Association (MNA) is the largest, most effective union for RNs across the state. As the voice for all registered nurses in Michigan, MNA advocates for nurses and their patients at the Capitol, in the community, and at the bargaining table.

An MNA Senior Labor Organizer is responsible for organizing new staff councils into collective bargaining units. Travel within the state is required. This position requires extensive outreach to nurses working in collaboration with other organizers under the direction of the Director of Organizing.

  • External Organizing – Is assigned the designated lead worker role on a campaign or campaigns directing additional organizers and assess the ability to build capacity within the campaign. Develops and Implements organizing plans including utilization of other MNA organizers as assigned. Assists organizers with their work/turf plans. Holds daily and/or weekly debriefing sessions with staff as needed. Coordinates various campaigns and projects and their components with their manager and other departments. Creates accurate workplace maps and assesses the commitment of nurses through one-on-one and works to build relationships with nurses. Identifies nurse leaders, helps move RNs in support conversations of forming a union, and prepares for an NLRB election.
  • Internal Organizing – Plays a lead role in developing strategy and executes internal organizing activities in existing bargaining units, which may include member assessments and education, leadership development, community visibility events, legislative or political activities, and direct actions in support of contract enforcement or contract negotiations. Works independently within a plan.
  • Planning – Assists in developing policies and objectives for the Organizing program consistent with the goals and objectives of MNA. Participates with the Director of Organizing, other organizers and labor representatives in developing MNA’s overall plan for organizing new bargaining units. Contributes to a statewide internal organizing plan in collaboration with other staff.
  • Communications – Helps develop materials for use in external and internal organizing in conjunction with other organizing staff, labor representatives and the communications department.
  • Training and Mentorship – Designs and facilitates portions of organizer training and ongoing staff development, serving as an active mentor to other organizers. Works closely with management to address and solve problems among staff.

Education and Experience Required for All Organizers

  • A degree in nursing, labor relations, political science or a related field
  • Three or more years of progressively responsible external union organizing experience
  • A commitment to the goals and values of the labor movement
  • Ability to sue strategic judgement and problem-solving skills
  • Current Michigan driver’s license, willingness to travel and reliable transportation
  • Demonstrated proficiency in lead organizer skills and lead organizing experience.
  • Strong writing, research and communications skills.
  • Strong listening and persuasion skills.
  • Ability to relate to and work with diverse groups of people in high pressure environment.
  • Ability to work independently within the context of a plan.
