Professional Responsibilities:

  • Develop relationships with media outlets and education and labor reporters
  • Write press releases and disseminate them with appropriate media outlets and follow up with media contacts to garner coverage of the issue/event
  • Write Op-Eds for AFTNJ’s president or other officers and/or affiliates as needed
  • Prepare external communications when needed (letter, notices, announcements)
  • Maintain AFTNJ’s website including setting up event registrations and sign-ups
  • Maintain AFTNJ’s social media presence on Facebook, Twitter, Instagram or other platforms
  • Write and publish a weekly digital newsletter.
    • Contact locals/chapters on a regular basis for news items for the digital newsletter
  • Publicize the issue campaigns that AFTNJ and its affiliates as needed. This work includes, but is not limited to:
    • Drafting and disseminating action network petitions,
    • Letters,
    • E-blasts,
    • Social media campaigns,
    • Press releases, etc.
  • Support of locals/chapters:
    • set up, train and provide support to locals/chapters on social media platforms,
    • setup, train and provide support to locals/chapters on managing a website,
    • action network training and support,
    • contact the press regarding issues affiliated locals are facing,
    • draft press releases for locals and send them to the appropriate news outlets,
    • photos and videos,
    • provide training and support for the AFT CONNECT database
  • Other duties as assigned.

Must be able to work in a diverse environment. Exceptional time management and multi-tasking skills are needed. A four-year college degree with at least two years of experience, either work or internships is required.
