Description of Union
The Oakland University chapter of the American Association of University Professors (OU-AAUP) promotes academic freedom, academic due process, shared governance, and the public good of higher education on Oakland University’s southeast Michigan campus.

OU-AAUP represents over 700 tenure-track and contingent faculty members. The OU-AAUP is a collective bargaining chapter of the AAUP. Much of its activity therefore focuses on negotiating and enforcing contracts between the Association and Oakland University, including bargaining, grievances, and arbitration. OU-AAUP has over 50 years of successfully representing its members. It is interested in pursuing creative and assertive efforts to achieve its goals under changing conditions.

The Oakland University chapter of the AAUP seeks to hire a new Executive Director. The Executive Director is the only full-time employee of the Association, but OU-AAUP retains outside legal counsel, outside accounting, and employs short-term staff for administrative work. The new Executive Director will fulfill a set of important tasks as Organizer, Liaison, and Administrator.

Main Job Duties

  • Educate and inform members about the work of the union
  • Advise and represent members
  • Respond to member inquiries and concerns
  • Prepare and organize seminars and workshops
  • Direct day-to-day operations of the organization
  • Set up meetings and arrange meeting facilities
  • Develop and manage electronic surveys and ratification votes


  • Work with Oakland University administrators to fulfill contractual obligations, e.g. reports, member lists
  • Attend all Executive Committee meetings and act as recording secretary
  • Act as a consultant to the Executive Committee and subcommittees
  • Advocate and represent members on contract interpretation matters
  • Participate on the negotiation team
  • Assist the President, Officers, and members of the Executive Committee
  • Serve as committee liaison and support
  • Communicate with affiliates


  • Design/Supervise creation, editing and distribution of member communication pieces
  • Maintain website
  • Maintain detailed membership database and member list serve
  • Supervise staff/interns
  • Fiscal management including:
    • Prepare financial statements/quarterly reports
    • Monitor bank accounts and investment instruments
    • Manage accounts receivable/payable
    • Prepare budget
    • Prepare year end statements for auditor
    • Manage the preparation and implementation of the audit
  • Maintain filing system and organization of resource materials
  • Manage office space, furnishings and equipment
  • Assist with collection of data and statistics

Job Requirements:
The Ideal candidate will have a minimum of a Bachelor's degree Three to five years’ experience in a collective bargaining administration
Ability to work a flexible schedule, with some evenings or weekends possible

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  • Knowledge and understanding of higher education and the issues impacting faculty and academic professionals
  • Ability to deliver outcomes on assignments connected to short, intermediate, and long term OU AAUP goals
  • Proficient in current versions of Microsoft Excel, Word, Publisher, and MS Access
  • Excellent written and verbal communication and time management skills
  • Ability to organize and advocate on behalf of members
  • Ability to relate well and easily with higher education faculty and academic professionals
  • Efficient in responding to emails, phone calls, and requests (preferably within 24 hours)
  • Follow general leadership direction and adjust appropriately in response to feedback and supervision
  • Ability to work independently with general supervision and limited support
  • Ability to work collaboratively with AAUP leaders and members

Reports to:
The OU-AAUP President and the officers of the OU-AAUP Executive Committee

Location, Hours, and Compensation:
Oakland University main campus, Rochester, MI. Full time, salaried position
