SEIU Local 1000 is seeking an Area Coordinator for various locations. We have offices in Oakland, Los Angeles, Fresno, Ontario, Sacramento and San Diego. We are looking for an experienced leader who has trained, directed, and led organizers and members; a tireless advocate for the rank-and-file; and someone who excels at both strategy and tactics. SEIU Local 1000 is a cutting-edge labor union that represents 96,000 state employees in 9 bargaining units throughout the State of California. We negotiate and enforce a labor contract that ensures good working conditions, fair wages and secure health care and retirement benefits.
The Ideal Candidate Will:

  • Lead from a clear vision and purpose.
  • Organize multiple projects, regular goals, and organizational programs with clear communication around priorities and time management.
  • Develop, challenge and support staff to maximize their potential.
  • Build effective staff and member teams.
  • Create clear pathways to motivate team members and achieves results.
  • Collaborate and coordinate with others across the organization to achieve shared goals.

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Leading from the Local 1000 Purpose Statement.
  • Embodying and communicating a clear vision for the organizing team.
  • Modeling strengths-based leadership.
  • Developing strategic plans for your region to achieve organization wide goals and priorities.
  • Generating, monitoring and analyzing reports.
  • Coaching, training and mentoring staff in core organizing skills.
  • Working with staff on their own development goals and plans.
  • Managing and leading with an equity and inclusion lens.
  • Leading team meetings that are engaging, challenging and clarify priorities.
  • Supporting and fostering collaboration and coordination with peers.
  • Overseeing the implementation of statewide programs and special projects.
  • Ensuring your team meets statewide and regional goals.
  • Fostering accountability through effective systems and structures and regular tracking and management of outcomes.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Qualifications and Experience:

  • Preferred candidate will have 5+ years of running large organizing campaigns in a labor or community organizing context.
  • Minimum of 2 years’ experience leading or supervising staff.
  • Experience managing large-scale programs and projects with a demonstrated ability to manage competing deadlines.
  • Experience with team building, developing diverse individuals, and strategic planning.
  • Experience with collective bargaining, representation and database management.
  • Ability to establish and maintain rapport and credibility with diverse demographic groups, as well as with professional, technical, administrative and service workers.
  • Ability to communicate and embody the organization’s culture, priorities, and values.
  • Occasional overnight travel and weekend work is required.
  • Valid driver's license, car and insurance.
