Full-Time Organizer

Covering Southern California


This is a full-time project-based position to work on organizing campaigns located in Southern California. This project is a joint venture between the American Federation of Teachers and the California Federation of Teachers. Position will be based in Southern California, but requires regular travel throughout the state. Organizers are responsible for a variety of aspects of a campaign including building relationships with workers, developing issues-based organizing plans for assigned areas, and for recruiting and sustaining motivation of organizing committee members and activists. Union organizing experience preferred.

  • Be in possession of an insured vehicle and valid driver's license
  • Demonstrated ability to work with a diverse population
  • Have strong communications skills
  • Be motivated, responsible, organized, professional and detail-oriented
  • Be able to work independently while also being able to incorporate constructive feedback and direction from the campaign Lead.
  • Experienced in community, student, labor, or environmental activism is a plus
  • Bilingual, especially Spanish/English, is desirable
  • Being comfortable organizing a highly educated workforce is desirable
  • Experience with higher education policy and issues is desirable
  • Being a skilled and experienced organizer, ideally with 2-3 years of organizing experience in the labor movement, particularly in higher education or working with professionals, is desirable


  • Organize and mobilize workers
  • Attend regular meetings with supervisors and team to discuss progress and plan activities
  • One-on-one visits, site visits, meetings, and other interaction with members and potential members
  • Enter assessments and other data collected in a database on a regular basis
  • Occasionally, be assigned to other parts of the state or country as required
  • Take direction on activities to grow AFT membership and accomplish goals
