Colorado Digital Organizer

Job Title: Digital Organizer
Location: Denver, CO

Reports to: State IE Director

Purpose of Position:
SEIU Colorado is hiring a Colorado State Digital Organizer, who will oversee the execution of our 2020 Independent Expenditure Digital Program. The Digital Organizer is responsible for managing the online and social media of the IE program, coordinating centralized regular text banks, and supporting partners and locals running their own IE text banks. As an independent expenditure position during the 2020 election, the Digital Organizer is prohibited from coordinating and/or contacting candidates and their campaigns. The Digital Organizer will engage supporters in taking action for the Unions for All agenda after the election and during 2021. This position begins in May and runs through at least the end of 2021.

Primary Responsibilities:

  • Manage social media accounts including the Working People’s Platform Website, Facebook, and Twitter accounts to engage and grow online communities, including day to day execution, community management and monitoring, and ensure message consistency across multiple social media platforms.
  • Create, edit, review, and approve digital content, and regularly analyze data and draws actionable insights to optimize SEIU’s social media efforts
  • Organize regular text banks. This includes: regular communication with member texter volunteers, drafting text scripts, making recommendations about text campaigns, coordinating with other team members, providing reports on results and recognizing volunteers.
  • Assist with digital join up programs by working with locals and partners to acquire and return membership data, write scripts, and communicate with other members of the team.
  • Coordinate with Local Union Communications Teams to strategize about how to integrate the IE program into their political, organizing and bargaining campaigns.
  • Help design and run tests with text and other digital platforms.
  • Identify technological problems and provide some training to staff, members, volunteers, and partners on peer to peer texting and social media, as needed.
  • Work with other members of the team to ensure data is being moved to VAN and other databases as needed.
  • Manage the data flow between programs (canvass, digital, etc) and communications after they sign up (ex: text/email on boarding after sign pledge card with canvass)
  • Create a digital organizing pipeline that moves sign ups from digital ads, social media, canvassing, and partner programs into action steps, organizing leads, and partner programs.
  • Promote name ID and turnout for targeted candidates and ballot measures in the Primary and general election through SEIU’s Unions for All Demand.
  • Build relationships and collect stories while gathering videos/photos/quotes to help drive our narrative through earned and paid media.
  • Follow-up with recruits who come from digital, canvass, and partner programs through peer to peer texting.
  • Create and manage an online voter guide
  • Drive SEIU’s Unions for All and the Working People’s Platform agendas in the 2021 Legislative session.

Directions and Decision Making:
This position reports to the State IE Director.

Education and Experience:
Bachelor’s degree in Communications, Marketing, English or related field and one to three years of relevant work in organizing, campaign communications, and/or use of web sites and email and other Internet communications tools for advocacy OR, a combination of education and experience that would provide for the following knowledge, skills and abilities:

  • Experience maintaining multiple social media platforms for an organization, including content development, monitoring, and using social media management tools. Must have a solid understanding of appropriate posting techniques on each social media platform.
  • Thorough knowledge of digital communications strategy and tactics to support advocacy driven campaigns, audience acquisition efforts, and earned media and paid media efforts.
  • Experience with peer to peer texting platforms, and social media administration, photo and video editing, and graphic design.
  • Ability to operate in coordination with other team members and organize time with independence.
  • Ability to handle multiple “priorities” assignments simultaneously and meet established deadlines.
  • Ability to work in a coordinated and collaborative fashion with more senior communications and at times senior executive staff in complex and sometimes political situations.
  • Familiarity with VAN, Microsoft Office and Google Suite.
  • Candidates should be a motivated self-starter with an interest in and commitment to unions, the labor movement, and their mission and objectives.
  • Ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing.
  • Excellent writing and editing skills.
  • Must be willing to work extended hours, including evenings and weekends.
  • Ability to travel on occasion.
  • Bilingual skills are a plus.

Physical Requirements:
Work is generally performed in an office setting. Long and extended hours and some travel may be required.

Compensation and Benefits:
This position is a salaried, full-time, position through December 2021. Salary commensurate with education and experience.
