Lead Community Organizer

The Los Angeles Black Worker Center (LABWC) seeks a Lead Community Organizer who is ready to make history while working with the first Black Worker Center in California, an emerging lead voice on Black work and economic justice. The Lead Community Organizer will work under the direction of the Campaign Coordinator to assist with developing campaign strategies and lead on shaping organizing plans that advance the vision, mission and goals of the LABWC. The Lead Community Organizer will lead by example and inspire diverse communities of Black workers into action with the LABWC. They will manage and supervise a team of up to 5 organizers to recruit new members; develop leaders and build committees; and mobilize members for direct action campaigns. The position also includes cultivating and maintaining relationships with key community organizations and elected officials. Ideal candidates must possess a demonstrated commitment to self-determination for the Black community, social change strategies and the ability to empathize and build relationships with Black workers.


  • Lead a team of up to 5 organizers, these include but are not limited to: developing and troubleshooting organizing workplans for outreach and recruitment, training on basic organizing skills & principles, designing leadership plans, perfecting the “rap”, and inspiring others to act on the LABWC mission
  • Prepare work organizing workplans, calendars, files, and reports.
  • Develop campaign plans with the goals, strategies and tactics necessary to execute the plan, including effective management of staff, volunteer, and administrative resources.
  • Identify, recruit and train leaders by implementing the LABWC leadership ladder toward building democracy through member committees and various trainings and activities.
  • Build durable and strong relationship with members, activists and leaders
  • Visits workers at their job sites, in community, and in their homes and trains organizers and members in organizing on site.
  • Collaborate with communications staff to develop messaging and campaign materials.
  • Implements effective staff development and team building.
  • Support the creation and work in thought partnership with Campaign Coordinator on coalition-building efforts with other unions, community based- organizations and students to support local and statewide campaign goals.
  • Manage lists, charts, and databases.
  • Meet strategic goals and deadlines and manage organizers success of meeting statewide goals and deadlines.
  • Supports workers’ efforts to get support on labor and anti-discrimination laws.
  • Works with Campaign Coordinator to supervise activities, developments and progress of assigned campaigns.


  • Minimum 3 years of experience as a worker organizer with a membership based organization
  • Experience leading and/or supervising multiple staff at various levels of experience
  • Able to manage competing, assignments, projects, managing timelines, and effectively using database systems, or equivalent experience
  • Excellent analytical, written and verbal communication skills
  • Basic computer skills: (i.e. Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint)
  • Familiarity with virtual communications (e.g. video chat software, social media platforms)
  • Experience with cutting turf and generating reports on community canvassing software.
  • Demonstrated leadership experience, hardworking and self-disciplined
  • Ability to work well with a team and motivate others to take action
  • Excellent interpersonal skills and ability to work with people from diverse backgrounds and cultures
  • Ability to work well under pressure and manage time efficiently
  • Knowledge of issues affecting unemployed and underemployed Black workers, poor and working class communities, and of the Los Angeles labor movement a plus!
  • Strong commitment to racial justice, workers’ rights, and empowerment of diverse Black communities
  • Valid CA driver’s license and access to a car for work related travel
  • Willingness to work long hours and weekends as needed

Full-time position, local to South Central Los Angeles, up to $54,080 annual salary, plus a generous benefit package.
