Union Organizer

Based in Baltimore, MD


Description of Work:
The Organizer shall work under the direction of MPEC leadership to design, execute, and implement outreach and organizing activities with members and potential members with the objective of building membership density, worksite structure and a stronger union. The Organizer will perform duties that vary in location across the state of MD, assignment, and scope to achieve MPEC’s overall goals and expectations.

The Organizer will receive direction from and report directly to MPEC Leadership as well as state and national AFT affiliates. The Organizer will be required to submit timely reports, organize, and prioritize his or her time to execute plans and achieve goals with minimum supervision.

Essential skills:

  • Ability to develop basic strategy for organizing and engagement on your turf
  • Ability to reach members and potential members, conduct effective organizing conversations and assessments, and develop activists and leaders
  • Ability to use worksite/membership lists, maintain coherent data, and use data to inform planning and priorities

Requirements and expectations:
The Organizer may be required to work long and irregular hours, some weekends, and holidays as needed. Turf is statewide across MD; therefore, candidate must be willing to drive long distances for work. The position may also require, at times, travel outside MD.

  • Must have a strong commitment to social justice and the goals and principles of our union
  • Ability to develop a turf plan and carry out work with minimal supervision
  • Ability and skill to assist MPEC with meeting its goals of organizing and building worksite strength
  • Ability to work in a diverse environment that values and promotes diversity
  • Ability to work effectively with union leaders and people of varied backgrounds
  • Must be able to handle multiple “priority” projects simultaneously and meet established deadlines
  • A high level of judgment, ability to take initiative, and to work with and develop teams
  • Computer literacy with the ability to be trained as needed. (Minimum: Word, Excel, Access, PowerPoint, a full host of Adobe products including InDesign)
  • Proficient in communications through various social media platforms
  • Must have a reliable car that can be used for work, valid driver’s license, current automobile insurance with at the State’s minimum coverages as defined by law.
