United Campus Workers of Arizona/ CWA Local 7065 seeks an Organizer with a passion for social justice to help organize a wall-to-wall union in the University of Arizona system. University workers eligible to join this union include undergraduate workers, graduate student workers, staff, lecturers, instructors, and faculty.

Prompted by the COVID-19 crisis, workers at the University of Arizona organized the Coalition for Academic Justice at the University of Arizona (CAJUA) CAJUA is a coalition of faculty, staff, graduate and professional students fighting for equity, transparency and representation at the University of Arizona. In July of 2020, the CAJUA membership voted to form a union as a local chapter of United Campus Workers, part of the national Communications Workers of America union.

The full-time Organizer will be responsible for organizing workers throughout the University of Arizona by directly signing up union members, creating organizing plans, and developing activists. The organizer will organize members around issue campaigns to improve material conditions for all rank-and-file members.

On-the-job training for this position is provided, with the potential to participate in campaigns and conferences relevant to the responsibilities of the position.


  • Recruit new members to the union
  • Train and work with rank-and-file union activists in organizing their co-workers
  • Implement organizing program and help develop campaign plans
  • Conduct worksite visits of all employment positions eligible to join the union
  • Coordinate canvassing campaigns with existing membership
  • Plan and coordinate organizing events and direct actions
  • Help plan and coordinate regular membership meetings
  • Design and create flyers, posters, and other forms
  • Communicate with membership and potential members about organizing through email, Slack, text messages, and digital platforms
  • Support research and development of potential organizing projects
  • Maintain a secure archive of all organizing relevant documents and union organizing communication
  • Support the elected union leadership

Minimum Requirements:

  • Ability to work a flexible schedule, including some nights and weekends
  • Strong commitment to social justice, antiracism and the labor movement
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills
  • Proficient with technology including but not limited to Slack, Word, Excel, email, text messaging, OpaVote, and Nation Builder
  • Ability to work as team member, as well as take individual initiative with minimal supervision
  • Driver’s license and reliable access to car
  • Previous union and/or community organizing experience
  • Previous work history of supporting leadership development
  • Previous work history of legislative or policy advocacy

Preferred Requirements:

  • Basic knowledge of labor laws and union organizing efforts in Arizona
  • Spanish language fluency
  • Previous experience organizing workers on a university campus
  • Graphic design and website maintenance skills
  • Basic knowledge of university financial systems and governance

$40,000 – $45,000 per year with health care benefits, paid vacation, and 401K contribution.
