Communications Director

Based in Chicago, IL

SEIU Local 73 seeks to hire a Communications Director to work closely with the senior leadership team as a key advisor in the development and implementation of communications strategies that resonate strongly with both internal and external audiences and put the union in a position to raise standards for working people. 

Duties and Responsibilities

The successful candidate will be expected to:

Develop and Implement Communications Plans

  • Develops overall messaging around key union issues and campaigns in close collaboration other members of the senior leadership team.   

  • Internal Member Communications.  Develops and implements strategies that maximize positive interactions with members and utilize available platforms and best practices for communicating with members.

  • External Communications.  Develops and implements strategies that support contract, issue and political campaigns and position the union as a strong progressive voice for union members, working people, and the communities they serve. 

  • Designs, produces and distributes press releases, flyers, mailings, digital media (web content, email, social media), and other communications materials. 

  • Prepares members, officers, staff and allies to serve as union spokespersons.

  • Generates positive media coverage for the union, its members and causes that result in public support for union campaigns and issues; acts as point person for all media events and inquiries. 

  • Works in collaboration with allies on shared communication strategies. 

  • Prepares timely written reports of communication department’s activities.

Supervise, Mentor and Train

  • Ensures high performance, results and overall quality, efficient and effective operations from assigned communications staff.

  • Provides support and accountability to assigned communications staff.

  • Sets a standard of excellence and rigor.

  • Contributes to a collaborative team effort to meet the Local’s communications goals.

  • Oversees communications consultants as necessary.

  • Coordinate Across Departments

  • Trains members and staff on best practices in communications messaging, strategies and technologies.

  • Assignments to political, electoral and growth mobilization as required by the organization.

  • Other duties as assigned.

Job Qualifications and Requirements

  • At least 5 years’ experience in progressive advocacy communications, campaigns, branding and media relations, and in designing and implementing strategic communications plans.

  • Record of success in crafting a wide range of communications strategies and messages that help organizations further their mission and grow their strength. 

  • Senior leadership experience with a labor organization or other advocacy group. 

  • A solid grasp of how to use emergent technology and data metrics to connect across a wide demographic spectrum and to accurately assess effectiveness of communications; direct experience with social media and digital best practices. 

  • Experience with photo and/or video equipment and editing software. 

  • The ability to handle multiple projects simultaneously, and meet established deadlines. 

  • A demonstrated ability to achieve earned media goals. 

  • Proven ability to manage in a manner which inspires, motivates, develops, and maintains good working relations with diverse membership and staff.

  • Strategic vision and direction for short- and long-term campaigns on local, regional, state, and national issues and levels to win policy and administrative change.

  • Strong computer skills; experience with union databases systems for inputting and tracking organizing targets preferred.

  • Experience with the following types of organizations is highly significant: labor unions, progressive issue advocacy organizations, community organizations, political campaigns and elected officials, employer/union relations.

  • Personal commitment to the mission and goals of SEIU Local 73.

  • Excellent oral and written communication skills.

  • Commitment and capacity to maintain the highest level of integrity, judgment, confidentiality and discretion in managing union information and resources.

  • Moderate in-state travel and occasional overnight travel.

  • Strong personal planning and time management skills, ability to develop and carry out work plans with minimal supervision, and ability to work with people from diverse cultures and backgrounds.

  • Excellent independent judgment and attention to sensitive relationships.

  • Degree in media, communications, marketing, writing or a related area preferred. 

Working Conditions

  • The position is based in the Chicago headquarters of the union and will report to the Chief of Staff.

  • A cell phone, driver’s license, reliable vehicle and automobile insurance are requirements of this position. Cell phone and car allowance is provided. 

  • Long and irregular hours frequently required.

  • The position includes a competitive salary based on experience and a package of benefits that includes paid holidays, vacations, fully paid health benefits including health, dental, vision and prescription drug benefits.   All staff in the union are participants in a defined benefit pension plan fully paid by the employer.

  • The Local does not pay for travel or relocation expenses. 

  • This position is a confidential, supervisory, managerial, exempt, non-bargaining unit classification.
