The Washoe Education Association (WEA) is located in Reno, NV. The WEA is currently staffed with an Office Manager, a UniServ Director, and an Executive Director. The WEA President is a full-time release president. The WEA is a “local option” affiliate of the National Education Association and the Nevada State Education Association, with approximately 2,500+ WEA members. Washoe County School District (WCSD) has 100+ schools and employs approximately 4,100 educators and approximately 8,000 employees. SUMMARY DESCRIPTION
The Executive Director is the Association’s chief administrative officer and leads a staff in coordination with WEA President to ensure implementation of the full scope of policies, procedures, and programs approved and adopted by the 10 member WEA Board of Directors. In collaboration with the President and Board of Directors, the Executive Director develops and manages an annual organizational budget and is accountable to the Board of Directors for the long term financial and fiscal health and sustainability of the WEA. The Executive Director also provides general supervision of property owned by the WEA.

The Executive Director is responsible for planning and executing strategic priorities that elevates the professional and economic status of educators (teachers, counselors, librarians, nurses, speech language pathologists, physical and occupational therapists), promotes public education, and increases WEA’s membership and influence through organizing and engaging members in all membership categories. The Executive Director also directly engages in and assists the UniServ Director in various duties and responsibilities supporting and advocating for WEA members, including grievances, complaints, discipline hearings, conflict resolution, etc.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Leadership:
A public education advocate with a record of senior organizational leadership, who understands the role educators play in leading change in their profession. A leader who has engaged others to be proactive in creating a strong educational environment. Evidence of success in achieving desired outcomes when leading organizational innovation and change; a leader who has shown organizational ability and flexibility in confronting and adapting to challenging and changing political/organizational realities. Capable and willing to voice respectful and effective dissent when and where appropriate.

Interpersonal Effectiveness: An effective communicator who has excelled in building successful relationships. An established record of fostering teamwork and consensus, effectively managing conflict, implementing creative problem-solving, and necessary risk taking. Has an ability to inspire trust and communicate sound reasoning in a persuasive manner. Must be a leader who is who is able to develop networks, work effectively with those of diverse individual and cultural backgrounds and perspectives, and build internal and external alliances across boundaries to support strategic relationships and achieve common goals.

Judgment: Proven ability to analyze, comprehend, and articulate the operational goals and strategic plan of an organization and implement this plan to guide decision making. Must possess the expertise to anticipate outcomes and decide on the best course of action. Uncovers potential opportunities by challenging conventional thinking and assumptions. Demonstrated experience evaluating strategic issues, opportunities and risks and long-term impact. Capable of voicing concerns with a solution-based approach when communicating with other points of view. Must be confident articulating the rationale of decisions.

Member Focus: A leader who values public education and is focused on member needs and support. Someone who believes in member engagement, trust, and loyalty, and who is committed to fostering strong relationships between WEA and its members. An experienced leader who has successfully demonstrated the ability to implement quality programs and services that bring value to members. Demonstrated experience using data to identify additional ways to offer value to members’ professional practice and careers. An influential leader who understands membership and can expand WEA’s membership and influence, and who has effectively led innovative strategies, programs, initiatives, and policies designed to attract and increase new membership. Proven ability to create collaborative relationships and partnerships with local, county and state governments, as well as community groups and organizations.

Staff Relations: A leader who provides effective guidance for staff commitment to policy; assigns staff resources to programs and projects; coordinates, directs and evaluates the work of employees; delegates supervision to other management employees as appropriate; and supports high standards for work on behalf of members. Ability to balance the needs of elected member leaders with the long-term stability of the organization.

Fiscal Management: A leader who can devise and facilitate the development of budgets; administer and monitor budgets; effectively oversee compliance with legal and regulatory requirements; evaluate and manage risk; and ensure the proper management of all property owned and leased by the WEA.

Collective Bargaining Agreement (Contracts): A leader who effectively functions as the WEA’s lead negotiator in negotiating successor agreements, and who oversees the district’s fair and equitable compliance and administration of the agreement. A leader who not only functions in the role of Executive Director, but who regularly and directly engages in and assists the UniServ Director in various duties and responsibilities supporting and advocating for WEA members, including grievances, complaints, discipline hearings, training, conflict resolution, etc. A leader who regularly communicates with member leaders on updates to contract conversations with the district.

EXPERIENCE

  • A record of 3-5 years of senior-level leadership experience in positions of increasing responsibility.
  • Some experience as a UniServ Director is desirable.
  • Background in labor advocacy and collective bargaining required. Direct experience in functioning as the lead negotiator in the collective bargaining process is required.
  • Experience in public education advocacy is required.
  • Some experience as a classroom teacher is desirable.
  • Experience reporting to and advising an elected board of directors is desirable.
  • A record of life-long learning, including recent professional development work.

EDUCATION
Bachelor’s degree from an accredited four-year college is required. A Master’s degree is desirable.

SALARY AND BENEFITS
The WEA offers a competitive salary and benefits package, commensurate with experience and qualifications. The WEA is not a part of the NEA retirement system, but does provide a defined contribution to a retirement program agreeable to the employer and employee.

HIRING TIMELINE
It is anticipated that interviews will be held in November and early December, with the candidate selected for the position beginning on April 1, 2021.
