Deputy Director of Organizing

This is a Statewide position for covering California


SEIU Local 2015 believes that organized workers are the center of our power and critical to building the movement that can improve California communities and the lives of workers. To this end, the Deputy Director of Organizing, is central to the execution of Local 2015’s mission, vision, and core strategies.

Position Summary:
The Deputy Director of Organizing oversees the execution of external organizing related activities as well as collaborates with the Organizing Director in the overall development and implementation of the strategic organizing plan of SEIU Local 2015 in the field.

Essential Job Functions:
With support from the Organizing Director, the Deputy Director oversees the development and implementation of Local 2015 organizing/program in the field across the state with the desired outcomes in clear focus. The Deputy Director will assist in leading the Organizing Department in meeting the goals that align with the vision and mission of SEIU2015.

Duties & Responsibilities:
A wide range of responsibilities including but not limited to:


  • Independently develops, implements and is responsible for outcomes of campaigns that align with and produce results towards the program of the Local and International Union.
  • Coordinates with Internal Member Strength Directors on campaign work and staff development progress.
  • Creates systems within the department and aligned with union wide systems to track campaign, member and staff progress.
  • Represents Local 2015 at various SEIU and other organizational functions as requested that advance our organizing and their related partnership goals.

Leadership development

  • Oversees organizing coordinators and teams in developing the leadership of the organization, including the design and implementation of union wide programs to build organizational leadership identification, recruitment, development, and training.
  • In collaboration with Regional Directors, train and develop member leaders to be confident participants in helping non-union workers to organize with SEIU 2015.

Staff Development

  • Identifies learning opportunities, trainings and other staff development needs of supervisory staff and their teams.
  • Evaluates and makes recommendations for development of staff, promotions of existing staff or hiring for new recruits, and ensures key positions are filled in a timely manner.
  • Problem solves and addresses the work-related concerns of subordinate staff;
  • Works with Coordinators to develop and implement staff work plans and development plans

Builds Organizational Culture

  • Acts as internal agent of change, consistently challenging supervisors, leaders and staff to innovate in their current work to expand the local’s capacity to win on behalf of the members.
  • Embraces, support and promotes the organizations’ core values, beliefs and culture including: Local 2015 6 core values, culture of collaboration and team work, becoming an Anti-Racist Organization (ARO) and a culture of learning, accountability and organizing.

Administrative & Budget

  • Assists the Organizing Director in developing a budget that supports execution of organizing campaigns and union-wide goals.
  • Supports direct reports to develop recommended budgets, practice fiduciary stewardship of our members’ resources, allocate resources effectively and plan and implement program activities as appropriate.
  • Perform, provide direction and model execution of administrative duties including the enforcement of policies and procedures, development plans, disciplinary measures where necessary and trouble shoot in any area of the department.
  • Assuming part or all of the Directors role, as needed, in the event of absence, leave or period of high workload.


  • Experienced in leading large teams of staff and members in external organizing campaigns.
  • Develop and implement organizing campaign plans
  • Work highly independent as well as with teams
  • Knowledge of the Industry, the workers and workforce
  • 8+ years of experience in union or community organizing, campaign coordination and representation
  • 5+ years more of supervisory experience leading a team of at least four or more staff
  • Inspire, motivate and communicate effectively with staff and members
  • Working knowledge of computer programs Word, email, accessing the Internet and databases
  • Effective oral skills, written and listening skills in English; bilingual skills highly desirable
  • Skilled at managing and meeting many and varying deadlines
  • Effective facilitating and organizing meeting skills
  • Fluency in other languages is preferred.
  • Must possess a valid California driver’s license, auto insurance that covers business driving, and an automobile for business use.

Working Conditions:

  • Work long and irregular hours including evenings and weekends. Driving long distances for extended periods of time with overnight stays. Must have a valid Driver License, auto insurance and working automobile. May be based in Southern or Northern California.

Scope and Nature of Supervision:
The Deputy Director of Organizing reports directly to the Organizing Director. Supervision and direction may change depending on the focus of work.
