The United Food and Commercial Workers Union Local 21 is seeking an experienced Community Organizer. Over the past decade the Community Organizing Department has led UFCW21’s effort to develop deep, respectful and reciprocal partnerships with community based organizations leading on issues vital to our members, including: Racial, Gender and Economic Justice; Immigration Reform; Homelessness, Housing and Transportation; LGBTQ Rights; and Climate and Food Justice.

In turn, our partners have stood with our members to bargain good contracts and support new organizing, all while ensuring worker rights and our members’ issues resound throughout the community - in the streets, corporate boardrooms and halls of government.

We are looking for creative, visionary, and strategic people who want to make a difference in workers' lives and be part of building a progressive union that is prioritizing movement building in WA State.

Responsibilities include but are not limited to:

  • Build reciprocal, genuine relationships with labor, faith, food justice, racial equity, gender justice, climate justice, immigration reform organizations and diverse grassroots groups to further social and economic justice in WA State.
  • Lead UFCW 21 Movement Builders Program building leadership amongst UFCW 21 members across sectors to partner with organizations in their community addressing some of the most relevant issues of our time, as well as educate on the day to day experiences of working people in our sector and raise up common issues for joint action
  • Impact contract and political campaigns by organizing community participation in solidarity strategy and actions
  • Create articles, presentations, strategic plans and other written material
  • Develop and maintain systems for tracking relevant data

Position requires the ability to work independently and willingness to work long and irregular hours.

Required skills & experience include:

  • 3-5 years of Community Organizing
  • Commitment to racial and gender equity
  • Strong listening, speaking, and writing skills
  • Excellent group facilitation and collective strategizing skills
  • Very detail oriented
  • Able to work on multiple campaigns at once and be flexible with changing circumstances
  • Experience with unions (as a member, steward, intern, staffer)
  • Basic computer literacy required, advanced skills a plus.
  • Second language skills are preferred.

Salary / Benefits: Competitive pay and benefits, exciting work. Salary and benefits are set by collective bargaining agreement.
