Collective Bargaining Coordinator

Based in Northern California

 

SEIU Local 1021 was founded in 2007 when 10 local unions came together in northern California to form one larger, more powerful union. Together our members are building a true 21st century union fighting to empower and improve the lives of our members. We are 60,000 strong—organizing and representing public service workers in cities, counties, courts, schools, private non-profits, special districts, public health care, and nursing. LOCATION: Northern California

PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES AND DUTIES:
Under the direction of the Deputy Director of Internal Organizing and Advocacy, the Collective Bargaining Coordinator has the responsibility to:

  • Supervise, develop, and train representation staff to improve bargaining skills comprehensively throughout the Local in coordination with Regional Directors and the Member Engagement/Staff Development Director
  • Coordinate strategic bargaining campaigns across the union with Regional Vice President and Field Directors
  • Coordinate regional and industry bargaining conferences
  • Track bargaining progress, including required legal filings and notifications
  • Prepare and present collective bargaining reports to the Executive Board
  • Provide authoritative strategy and policy recommendations for advancing a successful collective bargaining program in an open shop environment
  • Facilitate communication between bargaining teams and sharing of work product
  • In coordination with Research, track and analyze relevant industry and regional trends and utilize available member data to deepen engagement in our campaigns
  • Work with Regional Directors and VPs, bargaining teams, and contract action teams (CAT) to develop strategic 'common good' bargaining campaigns that challenge income inequality and austerity initiatives in our communities
  • Develop revenue strategies for publicly funded services with Research and Political departments
  • Participate in appropriate statewide industry policy, legislative and budget workgroups
  • Work with Research to develop and maintain a database of template contract language, bargaining standards, and bargaining research
  • Work with Organizing to successfully onboard newly organized shops and win first contracts
  • Develop, track and monitor local-wide bargaining protocols
  • Determine need for and supervise use of consultants for specialized knowledge on a project-specific basis, if funding is available
  • Participate in negotiations as assigned
  • Perform other related duties as required/assigned by the Lead Director or designee

SKILLS, APTITUDE, AND COMMITMENT:

  • Exercise excellent judgment while working under extreme pressure
  • Knowledge of collective bargaining strategies, techniques, and trends
  • Knowledge of state, federal, and local laws governing collective bargaining
  • Familiarity with public and private labor and legal compliance
  • Ability to analyze campaign plans strategically
  • Excellent written and oral presentation skills
  • Work effectively as part of the senior leadership team

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Substantial professional experience in leading union contract bargaining
  • 2+ years' experience supervising staff and/or directing teams
  • Demonstrated ability to develop and execute strategic bargaining strategies, including escalation and strike planning
  • Prior experience with and understanding of the public sector preferred
  • Ability to interact professionally with culturally and linguistically diverse staff
  • Commitment to racial, gender, and economic justice and their intersections, both inside and outside organizations

Special Requirements:

  • Willingness to work irregular and long hours, including weekends and holidays, to attend required evening and weekend events/meetings.
  • Extensive travel may be required, primarily within Northern California.

Driving Requirements:

  • Must possess a valid California driver's license; pass a DMV check, and have a good driving record
  • Have auto insurance that covers business driving (minimum of $100,000 Salary starts at $107,386.14 per person/$300,000 per incident bodily injury liability/$50,000 property coverage); and must possess an automobile for business use.

Salary and Benefits: Salary starts at $107,386.14 and is based on qualifications and experience. SEIU Local 1021 offers a competitive and comprehensive benefits package.
