Strategic Researcher

Based in Seattle, WA


The Washington State Nurses Association is seeking a Strategic Researcher to provide research and analytic support for the collective bargaining program, legislative, organizing and issue campaigns. This position will play a critical role in supporting association efforts to improve the lives and livelihoods of registered nurses as well as quality patient care in Washington state.

Duties of the Strategic Researcher will include:

  • Conducting in-depth financial research and analysis of hospitals and health systems.
  • Identifying potential leverage points in union dealings with employers and serving as subject matter expert and conduct analysis on employer finances and costs associated with employee compensation, especially wages and benefits.
  • Preparing written and verbal analysis to support the bargaining position of WSNA.
  • Researching legislative and policy priority issues of significance to the Association as directed.

Qualifications for the candidate include:

  • Degree in Economics, Business, Health Policy, or other Social Science discipline is required. Professional work experience with labor unions is highly desired.
  • Experience researching and analyzing employer, industry, and government data. Legislative/regulatory research and financial analysis experience a plus.
  • Extensive experience with advanced research techniques including computerized information gathering and ability to interface professionally with staff, members, and stakeholders. Mastery of complex computer applications and extensive mathematical and computations skills desired, as are project management skills, from development through final execution.
  • Ability to function effectively under stress and with multiple and simultaneously occurring project deadlines.
  • Ability to craft in-depth research into compelling narratives that support organizational strategies.
  • Excellent communication skills, both written and oral, with the ability to represent organization internally and externally across a wide range of stakeholders and constituencies.

The Strategic Researcher is a salaried position and member of the staff union represented by Teamsters Local 117. Excellent benefits include fourteen holidays, twenty-two vacation days, sick leave, full health/vision/dental insurance, and pension.
