Campaigns Director

OVERVIEW OF RESPONSIBILITIES:
The North Shore AFL-CIO is seeking a CAMPAIGNS DIRECTOR to manage the political, organizing, and mobilization campaigns of the Federation. The Campaigns Director reports directly to the Executive Secretary and works closely with affiliated unions, allied organizations, and the staff at the state and national AFL-CIO.

DESCRIPTION OF DUTIES:

  • With the Executive Secretary, implementing and developing campaign plans, working with affiliated unions to mobilize members around campaigns.
  • Facilitates quarterly Organizers Roundtable meetings. Pursues organizing leads on behalf of affiliates and assists affiliates as requested with organizing campaigns.
  • Facilitates monthly Political Coordinators meetings. Prioritizes legislative and political efforts that are important to affiliates and labor as a whole.
  • Coordinates the Federation’s candidate endorsement process. Schedules a timeline, solicits candidate questionnaires, reviews submissions, and assists the Federation’s Scanning Committee in reviewing questionnaires and recommending endorsements of candidates and issues.
  • Recruits, trains and develops union members to run for local office. Coordinates efforts between member-candidates and the national AFL-CIO’s Path-to-Power Program.
  • Maintains relationships with elected officials and other key government leaders. Advocates for labor’s interests at all levels of government.
  • Assists with communications efforts as necessary, including basic management of Federation’s website, preparing press releases, and serving as point-of-contact for media inquiries.
  • Serves as the Federation’s Political Director and campaign lead during elections.
  • Performs other duties and political campaign work as assigned.

REPORTING:
Keeps Executive Secretary fully informed on a regular basis on issues affecting Federation programs.
Prepares and submits quarterly work summaries and other reports as requested.

QUALIFICATIONS AND SKILLS:

  • Bachelor's degree in political science or related field preferred.
  • 3-5 years of labor/political experience including a minimum of three years of demonstrated experience in developing, implementing and driving political/issue programs.
  • Demonstrated effectiveness in writing and implementing political/issue campaign plans.
  • Ability to manage political/issue campaigns both large and small.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Effective time management skills, including prioritizing and managing multiple tasks, and demonstrated experience in developing personal work plans and goals.
  • Demonstrated ability to work effectively in politically sensitive and high-pressure environments.
  • Computer proficiency is required; database/spreadsheet, email, internet, word processing, social media skills.
  • Demonstrated ability to resolve conflicts while maintaining important and effective relationships.
  • Ability to work long hours and weekends as required.

SALARY & BENEFITS
We offer a competitive salary as defined by the position’s collective bargaining agreement. The Campaigns Director will be a member of OPEIU Local 1794. Benefits include fully-paid single health coverage, SEP pension, vacation leave, sick leave, and paid holidays.
