The OFFICE & PROFESSIONAL EMPLOYEES INTERNATIONAL UNION (OPEIU), LOCAL 6, AFL-CIO, located at 150 Wood Rd. in Braintree, is a dynamic, progressive labor union for professional, technical, healthcare and office workers who recognize the value of having a voice at their work places and the need for labor and social justice.

OPEIU Local 6 represents members in the greater Boston area and throughout New England, with its headquarters in Braintree, Massachusetts.

OPEIU Local 6 is seeking a full-time Business Agent to represent workers and negotiate strong collective-bargaining agreements for our public and private sector members located primarily in the western part of the state.

The Business Agent serves in a variety of capacities and is responsible for working closely with the membership at their assigned shops, developing relationships, assisting in the election of shop stewards and communicating the interests of our members to their respective employers and the Local 6 offices. The Business Agent will report to the Chief of Field Services.

Additional responsibilities include:

  • Negotiating and administering collective-bargaining agreements in private and public sectors
  • Handling and investigating grievances up through arbitration
  • Engaging in member communication and outreach using a variety of media, including e-mail, website and personal communication
  • Coordinating with and maintaining shop stewards, and providing them with training and support
  • Utilizing mediation and performing dispute resolution
  • Attending and leading regular bargaining-unit meetings


  • Strong negotiation skills with a demonstrated proficiency in contract negotiations, preferably as a lead negotiator for labor contracts
  • Effective written and oral communication skills
  • Familiarity with NLRB and Massachusetts Department of Labor Relations policies and procedures
  • Ability to manage and prioritize a heavy workload, and work independently and efficiently
  • Willingness and ability to travel throughout New England, and occasionally work irregular hours
  • Ability to work in demanding situations with initiative, tenacity, and composure
  • Strong interpersonal skills and ability to work in a team environment
  • Experience as a union representative or proven ability to perform the duties of the position
  • Valid driver’s license, automobile and valid automobile insurance

Salary and Benefits:
Salary is commensurate with experience; benefits include health, dental, vision, and life insurance, automobile stipend, legal plan, 401(k) plan, and defined benefit plan.
