Director, Training

Based in San Jose, CA


The California School Employees Association is recruiting for a Director, Training to join our team. This is a leadership position responsible for managing the creation and implementation of training and development programs. This role will be critical in transforming the way we design and deliver high quality instructor-led and online training experiences.

We are a stable union representing over 250,000 members who work in 755 school districts and community colleges in California. We have approximately 300 dedicated employees. A list of offices and locations is on our website. Our members provide support services to students: they’re para-educators, administrative assistants, cafeteria workers, security officers, bus drivers, custodians, and skilled employees in grounds, maintenance and operations. CSEA is the largest independent classified school employees union in the world.

This key position is highly visible, reports to the Executive Director, and works closely with senior management and Association officers.

Examples of duties – Typical duties may include, but are not limited to, the following:

  • Create an overall strategy and vision for the Training Department by implementing comprehensive, innovative and measurable learning solutions
  • Partner closely with the Field Operations Department to assess needs and implement programs that deliver sustainable and relevant learning methods in order to drive high performance in the field
  • Implement and manage on-boarding programs for Board members, Association officers and committees
  • Actively manage a team of trainers
  • Assess LMS capabilities, effectiveness and cost; lead future creation of a flexible and engaging learning platform
  • Serve as a training expert and partner with subject matter experts to support the creation of best practices and materials for onboarding and field training
  • Create and facilitate training across multiple instructional delivery modalities, including e-learning, virtual, and face-to-face trainings
  • Occasionally travel to observe or deliver training on-site when appropriate
  • Perform on-going reviews of programs to ensure learning solutions evolve with our goals and ensure they are current and effective
  • Conduct periodic company-wide training needs assessment and analysis; make appropriate learning development recommendations
  • Manage the administrative functions within the team including but not limited to scheduling classes, maintaining training documentation, handling attendance records, generating reports, and coordinating enrollment

The ideal candidate should have the following qualifications and experience:

  • A minimum of 5 years’ learning and development experience as a proactive leader with effective management skills
  • Experience in building a learning and development infrastructure across a geographically dispersed workforce
  • Extensive knowledge of best practices in developing leaders and experience applying these best practices within organizations
  • Experience in implementation and management of a Learning Management System
  • E-Learning experience; ability to leverage technology to deliver training
  • Experience with the use of 360° and Emotional Intelligence tools and facilitation
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills; an engaging personality with strong interpersonal, communication, and relationship-building skills
  • Experience managing in a multicultural and multigenerational environment
  • Experience in a union environment is helpful
  • Bachelor’s degree or Masters in a relevant field of study

  • Provide leadership to CSEA staff and members
  • Be a quick and eager learner of new tools, technology, products, and processes
  • Create team building events
  • Possess strong management skills; ability to prioritize multiple projects, work independently, and manage/review projects
  • Exercise good judgment
  • Foster collaborative relationships with diverse cultural groups, as well as with professional, technical, administrative and service employees
  • Manage a budget
  • Work occasional weekends and/or travel overnight
