AFSCME Maryland Council 3

AFSCME Maryland Council 3

Lead Organizer

Based in Maryland

AFSCME Council 3 represents over 30,000 workers throughout the state including university staff at MD’s public universities, correctional officers, social workers, clerical support staff, nurses, and road maintenance workers. We organize in the workplace and fight for dignity, respect and a fair standard of living for all public service workers in MD.

There are tens of thousands of workers in Maryland who provide critical public services but do not have the same rights and ability to negotiate wages and working conditions as the state employees they work side by side with. AFSCME Council 3 is seeking applications for a Lead Organizer to drive the union’s new organizing program.

The Job:

  • Develop organizing campaign plans with the goals, strategies and tactics necessary to execute the plan, including effective management of staff, member and administrative resources.
  • Follow-up on organizing leads and make effective recommendations on campaign viability.
  • Drive the recruitment, development and maintenance of worker leader committees.
  • Write leaflets and other materials for campaigns.
  • Lead coalition-building efforts with other unions, student and community allies to support local and statewide campaign goals.
  • Work with staff and volunteer member organizers to develop and drive program.
  • Assure the accuracy of lists, records, databases and wall charts related to campaign.
  • Articulate a positive vision of the campaign and the union.
  • Support Council-wide events: Mobilize members to participate in Council 3 or AFSCME International events and help other staff with large mobilizations and campaigns in their turf as needed.

What We’re Looking For:

  • At least three years of successful union organizing experience and ability to create and move a campaign plan.
  • Success in leading staff and volunteers on an organizing campaign.
  • Ability to use social media and virtual platforms to support membership campaigns.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective work relationships with co-workers and members.
  • Commitment to racial equity and social justice.
  • Demonstrated ability to conduct research and gather information for negotiations, strategy development and other organizing activities.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills.
  • Willingness and ability to work long and irregular hours and weekends. Some travel required. Car and valid driver’s license a requirement.

We offer competitive salary and benefits.
