The San Diego Education Association (SDEA) is searching for union organizer who is committed to public education and the labor movement. The SDEA represents approximately 7,000 member educators who work for the San Diego Unified School District.

  • A two-page (maximum) explanation of how public-school unions can respond to the challenges created by the COVID pandemic.

Starting Salary: $89,481

Start Date: August 9, 2021

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Primary responsibility to serve as Organizer and Field Representative in union organizing and advocacy, inclusive of arbitration.
  • Develop training programs for SDEA members and member leaders.
  • Assist in the development and implementation of political campaigns related to schools.
  • Support in the development and coordination of union communications.
  • Negotiate union contracts and memoranda with relevant employers, inclusive of charter schools.
  • Perform other tasks as assigned by the Executive Director.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree or higher.
  • Union organizing experience.
  • Demonstrated leadership experience working with union members.

Desired Skills:

  • Successful experience with and demonstrated skill in a labor organization and coordination of complex union projects and activities.
  • Broad understanding of the critical issues and problems facing public schools and labor unions.
  • Strong organization and time management skills.
  • Excellent interpersonal and communications skills.
  • Ability to prioritize and follow through on assignments with little supervision.
