Organizing Coordinator I
Fight for $15 and a Union Campaign

Based in Michigan and Wisconsin

 

Job Type: Full Time

Reports To: Coordinator II, Coordinator III, Campaign Director and/or Division Director

Supervises: This position does supervise staff.

SALARY: Salary is commensurate based on experience.

Purpose of Position:
Organizing Coordinator is responsible for representing and assisting the SEIU-NFFWU in achieving its overall organizing program goals; responsible for driving and managing or assisting in managing multiple or large-scale organizing campaigns or major elements of the SEIU-NFFWU Organizing Program; organizing resources offered for projects and assisting with overall management of field administration.

SEIU NFFWU is working to expand the movement and deepen the successful fights to raise employment standards and unite workers in organizing their union in the fast-food industry through national, state and community campaigns.

Primary Responsibilities:

  1. Assists in formulating strategic campaign plans, including developing strategy, comprehensive campaign planning, narrative and message development, budget development and campaign office administration.  
  2. Is responsible for coordinating and executing field campaign plans.
  3. Develops recommended budgets; allocates resources effectively; and plans and implements program activities as appropriate.
  4. Supervises, leads, assigns, and evaluates organizing field staff, including developing individual work plans and overseeing their implementation and evaluation.
  5. Administers appropriate disciplinary action such as developing corrective performance plans or recommends terminations if necessary.
  6. Recruits, interviews and recommends hiring staff.
  7. Designs and implements organizing training and development plans designed to build effective teams to win union campaigns.
  8. Authorizes expenditures within the campaign budget.
  9. Integrates organizing plans with all other SEIU-NFFWU programs and strategic priorities.  Works cooperatively in collaboration with other allies; including labor unions, community organizations and elected officials to integrate various elements of the SEIU-NFFWU organizing program.
  10. Maintain regular contact with and reporting to SEIU-NFFWU leadership but expected to work independently to achieve organizing and other strategic goals.
  11. Performs other duties as assigned in support of the work of SEIU-NFFWU.

Expected to work with:
SEIU International staff and elected leadership; Local union staff and elected leaders; SEIU members, CTW staff; state federation and central labor council leaders and staff; staff and members of other unions; public officials; and key allies and community leaders.

Direction and Decision Making:
This position may report to a Coordinator II, Coordinator III, Campaign Director and/or Division Director but is expected to work independently.

Qualifications and Requirements:

  • At least three (3) years of organizing campaign experience with increasing responsibility and supervisory or team management experience.
  • Thorough knowledge of organizing planning, development and execution processes and best practices required.
  • Knowledge of strategies and tactics used by SEIU-NFFWU to organize, develop and lead workers that win union campaigns required.
  • Knowledge of team or organizational management and leadership skills required.
  • Ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing required.
  • Knowledge of unions and collective bargaining helpful.
  • Ability to write campaign plans, reports and other relevant documents.
  • Ability to use a computer and utilize basic software such as Word, Excel and VAN database.
  • Ability to supervise, develop and manage organizing teams made up of people from diverse backgrounds and cultures.
  • Ability to work effectively with elected leaders and staff in complex and sometime political situations.
  • Ability to create and conduct training sessions and staff development plans.
  • Ability to effectively and objectively evaluate staff and assist in developing a proactive corrective performance plan.

Physical Requirements:
The Organizing Coordinator must be available to work long and irregular hours, weekends and travel, potentially over large geographic areas.  The position often requires temporary assignments away from home.  Work is generally performed both in an office setting, and in the field, but may be required to work in other settings conducive to performing the tasks required to complete assignments.
