Legal Secretary

Based in Albany, NY


The NYS Public Employees Federation (PEF) is a labor union representing around 53,000 professional, scientific and technical workers in NYS government. Members include healthcare, education, corrections and supervision, youth services, direct care, and other professional titles.

Under legal direction, the Legal Secretary is responsible for the daily administrative operations of the Office of General Counsel and assists the Executive Assistant in the daily operations of the Legal Department.


  • General clerical and administrative duties;
  • Answer and screen phone calls for department;
  • Type and distribute letters, memos, briefs and pleadings;
  • Daily maintenance of files including closing, opening and active filing;
  • Review Lawyers Diary to provide reminders to attorneys;
  • Travel arrangements and logging mail on a daily basis;
  • Other duties as assigned;
  • Consistent and reliable attendance.


  • High school diploma or equivalent required;
  • Previous experience as a Legal Secretary/Administrative Assistant;
  • Able to acquire NYS Notary.    

Successful candidate must demonstrate:

  • Proficient in Microsoft Office and Google Suite products;
  • Ability to effectively communicate with attorneys, membership, and elected officials (both written and verbal);
  • Thorough knowledge of general office practices and procedures;
  • Strong organizational skills including time management and attention to detail;
  • Ability to work independently and in a team environment.

Salary and Benefits:
The salary range for this position is $43,913.00 - $50,180.00 (based on experience).
