UniServ Director / Organizer

Job Title: UniServ Director/Organizer
Location: Des Moines, Iowa
Salary: Per the collective bargaining agreement.
Closing Date: June 25, 2021

This full-time position will be half-time UniServ Director and half-time UniServ Organizer. The position will have responsibilities as a UniServ Director supporting local associations and as a UniServ Organizer supporting statewide and targeted organizing efforts.

The UniServ Director assists local affiliates and ISEA members in organizational and program development through visitation, diagnosis, and planning of programs designed to strengthen and improve the welfare of members and enhancement of the educational climate.

The UniServ Organizer will lead field organizing efforts in targeted local associations and potential units – both teacher and education support professionals. The work will be centered around the basic tools of relational organizing: one-on-one meetings, including membership asks, power analysis, charting internal relationships, leadership development (teaching and training), action and evaluation. The UniServ Organizer will also develop and implement membership recruitment and retention work.


  • Acts as the primary liaison and broker for informational resources, including the use of special consultants and specialists, for local affiliates and the UniServ unit.
  • Works to strengthen the effectiveness of local affiliates and the UniServ unit through training at the local, unit and state level.
  • Serves as individual member advocate for member needs; serves as local affiliate advocate.
  • Serves as a bargaining consultant for each local association bargaining team.
  • Provides accurate and timely communications with the UniServ Unit and local associations.
  • Setting up, conducting and/or overseeing one-on-one meetings.
  • Conduct regular building visits for association visibility, potential member recruitment and related efforts.
  • Build networks of leaders within existing local associations
  • Utilize and carry out the tools of relational organizing: one-on-one meetings, power analysis, charting/mapping internal relationships, teaching and training, action and evaluation.
  • Organize and carry out member recruitment, new unit, contract, political and/or other issue organizing campaigns.
  • Write and provide training (or train-the-trainer training) to local associations in organizing through advocacy.
  • Work cooperatively with UniServ Directors, local leaders and others involved in local organizing efforts.
  • Enter and analyze data related to member programs and organizing.
  • Positively contribute to assigned staff workgroups who support ISEA priorities.
  • Maintain and project a positive image of ISEA.
  • Assist in activities of the ISEA and NEA as required by the UniServ agreement and/or UniServ Manager.
  • Perform other duties as assigned by the UniServ Manager and/or manager.


  • A minimum two years’ experience in member organizing.
  • Considerable travel within the state of Iowa. Evening and weekend work will be necessary.
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills.
  • Ability to work independently without direct supervision.
  • Basic understanding of computer software (Excel, Word etc.)
