JOB QUALIFICATIONS

  1. Demonstrated experience (minimum 3yrs) in leading comprehensive union, social justice, or community campaigns, or similar transferrable experience.
  2. Experience in or sound knowledge of education, and other public/private labor issues.
  3. Experience working with teams of organizers or as a lead organizer.
  4. Ability to bring together diverse community groups into effective coalitions.
  5. Applicant must demonstrate strong written and verbal communication skills including the ability to write technical documents with content accuracy and be able to speak and present to audiences large and small effectively and persuasively.
  6. Applicant must be comfortable and competent while working independently and collaborate generously within a team.
  7. Ability to write and develop issue-oriented literature.
  8. Ability to simultaneously manage multiple organizing campaigns.
  9. Ability to adapt skills and organizing techniques to specific constituencies.
  10. Experience working with state and national labor boards.
  11. Applicant must have knowledge of and experience with the core activities of labor unions including but not limited to advocacy and representation, collective bargaining, organizing and mobilizing.
  12. Knowledge of essential computer software (Microsoft Office) and social media.
  13. Applicant must expect and be willing to work long hours, evenings, and weekends as well as driving long distances on a regular basis.
  14. Applicant must demonstrate a strong understanding of and commitment to racial and social justice and will advocate for these as applied to the Main Functions
  15. Bilingual is a plus.

MAIN FUNCTIONS
I. ORGANIZE NEW IFT LOCALS

  • Seek out and identify potential new locals or bargaining units.
  • Evaluate the likelihood of organizing success and prioritize targets.
  • Speak before groups interested in IFT information.
  • Develop/implement/manage organizing plans.
  • Play a lead role in coordinated organizing campaigns.
  • Build and develop leadership teams of workers.

II. BUILD MEMBERSHIP IN EXISTING IFT LOCALS

  • Assist in the development and deployment of IFT and local membership engagement and mobilization programs.
  • Meet with local leaders and assigned field service directors to help plan membership engagement and mobilization activities.
  • Train local leaders in effective strategies for internal organizing and member engagement.
  • Cultivate relationships with labor leaders and community organizations.
  • Assist local leaders in developing and implementing strategic issue campaigns in collaboration with community partners.
  • Assist local leaders and field service directors in building relationships and alliances with community organizations.
  • Train local leaders on effective strategies for engaging community and civic organizations on issues that impact our members and their communities.
  • Work collaboratively with field service directors and local union leadership to develop a community engagement program that helps advance a shared quality agenda for good schools with community partners.
  • Create a message that connects the Union to the concerns of the community.
  • Provide support to field service directors, local leadership, and broader membership in mapping the surrounding community (school or more generally), surveying members about existing community relationships, and developing relationships with community leaders and parents.
  • Help field service directors and local leaders develop a work and/or school site organizing structure that also prioritizes engaging with parent, student & community groups.
  • Network with other unions and community organizations through coalition involvement.

III. OTHER SPECIFIC ASSIGNMENTS

  • Work under the daily supervision and direction of the Director of Field and Organizing.
  • Work in cooperation with IFT and AFT staff.
  • Attend IFT meetings, workshops, and conventions as needed.
  • Carry out other assignments made by the President/COO or the Director of Field and Organizing
