Communications & Operations Director
Based in Phoenix, AZ
Introduction: The Arizona AFL-CIO is a non-profit federation of labor unions that represents over 150,000 working people across Arizona and is seeking to hire a Communications & Operations Director. This position will report to the Executive Director and Executive Council of the Arizona AFL-CIO.
The Communications & Operations Director will be responsible for managing all internal and external communications from the State Federation, Maricopa Area Labor Federation, Pima Area Labor Federation, Arizona AFL-CIO Constituency Groups, and Labor-Oriented Coalitions; developing and implementing a strategic communications plan; engaging with the press and scheduling any interviews for State Federation or Local Union leadership; developing written communications and managing social media platforms for multiple entities of the federation, including: the Arizona AFL-CIO, Maricopa Area Labor Federation, Pima Area Labor Federation, and Constituency Groups; facilitating the quarterly meetings of the Arizona AFL-CIO Executive Council and General Board; and planning and executing annual State Federation events and fundraisers.
Duties and Responsibilities:
- Develop and execute overall communications strategies for the federation and additional organizations
- Draft written materials, such as press releases, op-eds, speeches, and letters to the editor
- Serve as a press liaison and schedule and help prep State Federation and labor officers for news interviews
- Manage the state federation’s digital media presence, including the website, email list, and social media accounts
- Work with the National AFL-CIO team to manage and help execute any paid media campaigns when applicable – which includes direct mail and digital advertising
- Plan and execute earned media activities with labor officers and rank-and-file members in key media markets across Arizona
- Develop messaging materials for campaign staff and volunteers, including message boxes, message triangles, and talking points
- Participate in communications table meetings with fellow labor and progressive communicators to coordinate issue-based messaging and strategy
- Facilitate the quarterly meetings of the Arizona AFL-CIO Executive Council & General Board
- Plan and execute annual State Federation events and fundraisers, including: Annual Labor Day Breakfast Fundraiser, Day of Action at the Capitol, COPE and Constitutional Conventions, and any special meetings as they occur.
Education, Experience and Skills:
- A bachelor’s degree is required in public relations, marketing, journalism, English, creative writing, public policy, or a closely related field
- Strong writing and verbal skills
- At least three years or two election cycles worth of experience working in political communications preferred
- Understanding and experience working with the labor movement
- Experience in branding and marketing is a plus
- Graphic design and/or video production experience is a plus
Other requirements:
Work is generally in an office setting, however some travel may be required. The applicant must be willing to work in a fast-paced environment. Periodically long work hours are required.

Starting Salary: Starting at $60,000, negotiable commensurate with experience, plus benefits package.
