The Film Musicians Secondary Markets Fund (“Fund”) is a 501(c)(6) nonprofit organization based in Encino, CA. Its mission is to collect, process and distribute residual payments to musicians resulting from their work in film, television and digital media. For more information, visit www.fmsmf.org.

The Residuals Claims Representative is responsible for pursuing unpaid and disputed claims for residuals from contributing companies. This role will collaborate within the Compliance Department and with other Fund staff to pursue and recover unpaid or delinquent residuals. The focus of the Residuals Claims Representative is to proactively and diligently ensure contributing companies meet their obligations under the American Federation of Musicians collective bargaining agreement, and protect musicians’ right to accurate and timely payment of their earned residuals.


  • Handle multiple cases involving the collection of delinquent or disputed residuals, liquidated damages and/or interest.
  • Pursue claims against companies for alleged violations of the collective bargaining agreement(s).
  • Perform analysis of claims presented through interpretations of AFM collective bargaining agreements to determine the viability of claims, applicability of historical precedent and where appropriate, negotiate resolution of claims with obligated company.
  • Compose and prepare demand letters articulating the Fund’s position in support of the claims, based upon analysis and interpretation of the collective bargaining agreement and relevant industry precedents in the context of the facts presented in each case.
  • Research and analyze all relevant documentation necessary to pursue claims, including various agreements, session contracts, financial records, chain of title, signatory information and residuals history to prepare detailed reports of residuals owed and basis of obligation.
  • Draft and prepare analytical memoranda summarizing facts, issues presented, contractual interpretation and recommendations when referring unresolved claims to Department Head, General Counsel and Fund Executive Director for potential litigation.
  • Communicate with company representatives, affected participants and relevant AFM organizations as appropriate.
  • In addition to responsibilities for assigned claims, answer inquiries regarding residual obligations under the collective bargaining agreements.
  • Develop and maintain familiarity with all applicable Contracts and Agreements.
  • Utilize all internal and external data resources to research and obtain information on production companies, distributors, musicians, signatories, and other related guilds or unions.
  • Scan/maintain/organize/update digital and physical departmental company files.
  • Correspond with AFM, musicians and AFM locals where necessary to investigate claims.
  • Identify and forecast producer/distributor trends or changes in producer/distributor business practices that may create interpretative problems or impact enforcement of the residuals provisions of the AFM Agreements and provide recommendations for consideration by Department Head, General Counsel and Executive Director.
  • Assist other Fund departments with research.
  • Assist leadership team with special projects and ad hoc reporting, as assigned.

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Business, Labor Relations or related discipline required, or combination of college level education and 5 years of work experience in a business environment.
  • Exceptional analytical, critical thinking and problem solving skills.
  • Proficiency with MS Word.
  • Proficiency in Excel and math skills.
  • Proficiency in online research.
  • Demonstrable proficiency and excellence in written and verbal communication skills.


  • Residuals background and/or entertainment industry experience at a studio, guild, talent agency or law firm.
  • Paralegal certificate.
  • Accounting experience.


  • The ability to exercise discretion regarding confidential and sensitive information is essential.
  • Must be comfortable with all aspects of writing including drafting, proofreading, grammar and punctuation.
  • Must be able to comprehend and interpret collective bargaining agreements.
  • Must be organized, good at time management, detail oriented, a self-starter and good at follow-through to prioritize and perform all tasks associated with assigned work and ensure responsibilities are completed on time.
  • Must be comfortable working in a fast-paced department with multiple heavy deadlines.
