Senior Staff

Based in San Francisco, CA


The ILWU has a new, senior staff position opening up in San Francisco, California beginning the first of the year 2022. The ILWU is a bottom-up, rank and file International labor union. This position will report directly to the Titled Officers (International President, International Secretary-Treasurer, International Vice President -- Mainland, and International Vice President – Hawaii.)

Job Duties and Responsibilities
Contract Negotiation and Administration

  • Cost out contract proposals (employer and union) and contracts
  • Draft contract proposals and language
  • Advise union trustees on a defined benefit pension plan
  • Consult with professionals such as attorneys, actuaries, accountants, and CPAs

Union Administration

  • Analyze member appeals of adverse actions and draft decisions concerning such appeals
  • Review and edit union financial reports
  • Work with outside accountants concerning the preparation of LM-2’s and 990’s
  • Draft Officers’ correspondence and statements of policy
  • Assist in the planning and execution of triennial International convention, including calculating affiliates’ voting strength; drafting resolutions , statements of policy, three year financial report, and Officers’ report; advise Officers and others on policies and procedures; track the status of resolutions and statements of policy
  • Assist in the administration of the union’s triennial mail ballot election, including, combining voter eligibility lists from 60+ affiliates; updating said lists; calculate the timeline for the stages of the election; draft election committee decisions and communicate same to candidates; assist election committees in the drafting of their reports;
  • Assist Office Manager and Officers with HR questions and issues; draft employment policies
  • Assist in the planning and execution of education workshops, conferences and institutes, including acting as an instructor
  • Administration of the Union’s Beck compliance program

Political Action

  • File FEC periodic reports (generally monthly)
  • Track Federal campaign contributions to ensure campaign limits are not exceeded
  • Manipulate and import spreadsheet data into databases (Access/SQL Server), update databases, and export data out of databases
  • Make journal entries in Quickbooks
  • Create and modify reports in Quickbooks
  • Reconcile bank statements in Quickbooks
  • Benefit Administration
  • Administer a defined benefit pension plan, including adding new participants and beneficiaries; calculating participants’ benefits; updating participants’ records; providing data and information for Form 5500; working with Plan professionals including attorneys, actuaries, auditors, and financial advisors
  • Administer a defined contribution (401(k) plan; including adding new participants and beneficiaries; updating participants’ records; providing data and information for Form 5500s; working with Plan professionals including attorneys

Skills and Abilities

  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills
  • Strong analytical skills
  • Strong organizational skills
  • Proficient in Microsoft Word, Excel, Powerpoint, Outlook, and Access.
  • Knowledge of MS SQL Server and Visual Basic for Applications a plus
  • Experience using Quickbooks or other bookkeeping programs


  • Minimum 10 years’ experience working for a union with increased responsibility over time, including negotiating contracts and financial management
  • Ability to travel
  • Ability to work nights and weekends
  • Willing to re-locate to San Francisco, California

Salary and Benefits

  • Salary commensurate with experience with minimum of $120,000/year
