Secretary of Political Organizing and Campaigns

Position Overview
The Memphis and West Tennessee AFL-CIO Labor Council seeks a Secretary of Political Organizing and Campaigns. The position is Memphis-based and reports to the President of the Memphis Labor Council. The position requires significant time developing relationships with Local unions to move political and legislative campaigns; designing and implementing full spectrum electoral political programs; developing and winning local legislative reform efforts. This is a lead level position.

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Working with the Labor Council board and staff to increase Local union affiliations.
  • Building deep relationships with affiliate Locals and organizing affiliates to participate fully in local and state political and legislative programs.
  • Leading Local affiliates in the collaborative development and implementation of local electoral strategy, including the endorsement process, table coordination, electoral program and post-election co-governance and accountability.
  • Leading Local affiliates in the collaborative development and implementation of local electoral legislative/issue based campaign strategy, including engaging with Local government budget cycles and issue opportunities, community partnership building, and campaign design and implementation.
  • Creating scripts, lists, phone banks, and other Labor to Labor political communication, using the LAN database.
  • Identifying and recruiting union volunteers from affiliated unions for phone banks, peer to peer texting, worksite leafleting, relational outreach and other member communications.
  • Convening and facilitating voter outreach events, volunteer training and meetings.
  • Generating and assessing reports.
  • Collaborating on strategic plan development with the Labor Council board and staff
  • Supporting solidarity mobilization and other needs of affiliates
  • Supporting fundraising efforts.
  • Other duties as assigned

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Meeting facilitation and training program execution
  • Understanding of unions and labor political program
  • Experience with VAN, LAN or similar voter database
  • Volunteer recruitment and leadership

Qualification and Requirements

  • Excellent oral and written communication skills
  • Excellent tech skills, including Zoom, Google Suite, and social media platforms, as well as proficiency with VAN or other similar databases, Canva or similar design suite
  • Experience working on political campaigns
  • Experience with volunteer recruitment and training

Administration
This is a union-represented, exempt position, starting at $45,500, including full health insurance and defined benefit pension.
