Internal Organizer and Contract Representative

Based in Ypsilanti, MI

 

The Eastern Michigan University chapter of the American Association of University Professors represents approximately 500 tenured and tenure-track faculty members. The association is seeking a full-time Internal Union Organizer and Contract Representative. The ideal candidate for this position will be a person with extensive experience as an organizer (either in a union or non-profit setting) and a good understanding of higher education.

Job Duties

  • Communicate with members about workplace concerns and contractual issues
  • Increase member involvement
  • Work with association leadership to organize and/or facilitate workshops, action teams, meetings, rallies, actions, campaigns, etc.
  • Conduct research on contractual issues and trends in higher education
  • Assist in the drafting of various internal and external communications and other documents
  • Assist association officers and the executive committee
  • Assist in leadership development
  • Help to maintain association records (membership, union activities, databases)
  • Help represent the association in interactions with the University administration and groups on campus
  • Help represent the association to external organizations and actors (other unions, the mass media, local and state government, officials, community organizations, etc.)

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree with graduate education preferred
  • Understanding of labor rights and social justice principles
  • Understanding of basic principles of organizing
  • Demonstrated success in grass-roots organizing
  • A record of facilitating collective action in a non-profit setting
  • Ability to engage and support a diverse membership
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced environment, juggle multiple tasks and meet deadlines
  • Proficiency in various software applications (Word, Excel, Adobe) and social media platforms

Preferred Qualifications

  • Previous employment as a union organizer or as a faculty member in an institution of higher education
  • Familiarity with labor union contracts and the grievance process
  • Good understanding of the culture and issues of higher education
  • Experience with strategic planning
