Position Description
The Machinists Institute (MI), a 501(c)(3) nonprofit, was created by the International Association of Machinists & Aerospace Workers District 751 to fill a vital role for Machinists members and employers and the broader community. With the visionary leadership of the Union, MI will provide world class training to current and future aerospace, automotive and manufacturing workers. The Institute will focus on providing living-wage career opportunities through education and training across the state. Union partnership allows collective bargaining to bring meaningful and sustainable educational opportunities to Washington workers. MI is hiring a Apprenticeship and Student Affairs Specialist to develop, promote and implement effective workforce development initiatives with a focus on equity and inclusion across the industries we serve. The MI Apprenticeship and Student Affairs Specialist will report to the MI Director, Grants & Special Projects.

Student success is a core value of the Machinists Institute. There are a number of factors that can interrupt learning outcomes and goals. In order to ensure our student and program success the MI is looking to hire an Apprenticeship & Student Affairs Coordinator who is prepared to coach students in establishing their career goals and then assist them in how to plan, build, and navigate educational training and employment options to accomplish those goals.

The MI is in the early stages of developing and sustaining education and training across multiple locations in Washington state. The Apprenticeship & Student Affairs Coordinator will work closely with MI’s Director of Grants & Special Projects to oversee students, their career and educational goals and help them develop a sustainable plan that will enable them to fulfill those goals. This person will help students navigate such areas as financial aid, state unemployment, and social service providers. They will also work with all apprentices associated with MI to help them navigate the courses necessary to complete their RSI requirements, document progress through Work Hands and provide regular student check ins. This role also will provide Canvas orientation and technical support ongoing and to assist with any other issues that arise that affect success in their program. The candidate must include a focus on equity and inclusion across all aspects of their role. Current office location is 9125 15th Place South, Seattle, WA 98108

The MI Apprenticeship and Student Affairs Specialist must possess the following abilities:

  • Clear understanding of participant needs including the challenges, concerns, and issues they face, and ability to identify value-added methods and techniques to achieve desired outcomes.
  • Actively engage students early and often to understand potential challenges identify student focused solutions proactively.
  • Provide training/orientation in one-on-one, online and group formats.
  • Collect data and report findings related to participants/apprentices completing their program of study, their OJT and RSI hours, and those engaging in the job search process and obtaining employment and/or exiting from a program.
  • Manage career portfolio development by assisting participants in the process of collecting, documenting and developing resumes, written documents, etc.
  • Interpret policies and procedures in a manner that makes sense to those uninformed in the content.
  • Provide variety of strategies or solutions so a participant can overcome a challenge, address a concern, or comprehend an issue.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Collaborate with the Director of Grants & Special Projects and other MI staff along with outside agencies governmental agencies to identify issues, help create solutions, develop strategies, and produce outcomes related to students and apprentices associated with MI.
  • Engage and assist MI students, participants, and completers, to achieve academic and career goals.
  • Develop strategies to recruit and retain women, persons of color, limited English Speakers, veterans, and under-represented groups into apprenticeship programs and employment opportunities.
  • Monitor progress on students and apprentices to ensure milestones and outcomes are met.
  • Oversee team participants that includes instructors, apprenticeship program sponsors, etc.
  • Collect and analyze program and participant data.
  • Provide Canvas orientation and technical support to students and instructors.
  • Provide support and technical assistance for MI tracking systems such as Work Hands.
  • Work closely with instructors on Prior Learning Assessment policy and practice.
  • Market MI programs to current and potential students, attend outreach and recruitment events, track outcomes of marketing strategies, conduct exit interviews of students leaving programs to assess any need for MI policy/practice changes.
  • Fulfill and document activities identified in Registered Apprenticeship EEO Outreach and Recruitment plan, file necessary reports to ensure program is in compliance.
  • Maintain case management records, student outcome data, and more.
  • Connect participants and program completers to services and networking opportunities that result in exposure, experiences, and mentoring as needed.
  • Support employers, sponsors, training providers, and other key partners with challenges encountered with apprenticeship programs, working closely with MI Business Developer.
  • Report successes and challenges to internal and external stakeholders.

Salary and Benefits
The starting salary for the position is $80,000 – $90,000, depending on experience. The Machinists Institute also provides generous health and welfare benefits, retirement contributions into a savings plan, and generous leave.
