Payroll/Benefits Auditor

Based in Astoria, NY


Local 52, Motion Picture Studio Mechanics, IATSE, is seeking a Payroll/Benefits Auditor to work in the union's Finance Department. This position involves analyzing and reviewing payroll, tax, and personnel records to determine employer compliance with collective bargaining agreements.  The auditor is responsible for creating and submitting reports of audit findings to the Bookkeeper and Secretary Treasurer on a variety of employee benefit plans.  

We intend to train the auditor in the complete payroll function to act as a back-up for the Bookkeeper who will be on leave in the summer of 2021, as the auditor will be responsible for payroll during this leave.  Upon the Bookkeeper’s return, the auditor will begin the full audit position duties and be a back-up for payroll, as needed.

We expect our auditor to have the ability to work independently, as well as part of a team.  

Position Responsibilities

  • Backup payroll administrator responsibilities as needed.
  • Performing audits on payroll, tax, and other personnel records using an automated computer system and paper records.
  • Computing audit results and preparing audit reports.
  • Researching payroll records, reports, and contracts.
  • Traveling to employer facilities to conduct on-site inspection of records.
  • Scheduling and coordinating audit appointments with employers.
  • Transferring payroll data onto worksheets.
  • Retrieving accurate information from various departments and companies.
  • Follow-up on all issues ranging from incorrect wage & benefit payments and missing/incorrect data entries
  • Analyze and review findings in an attempt to spot unexplained trends, anomalies or other indications of problems.

Job Requirements

  • Associates degree, preferably in a business-related field.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills.
  • Strong working knowledge of Microsoft Excel.
  • Detail- and numbers-oriented focus.
  • Ability to work independently, as well as with others.
  • Organizational skills sufficient to meet and exceed given deadlines.
  • Experience with or knowledge of collective bargaining agreements a plus.
  • Experience with or knowledge of payroll systems a plus.
