Location: Oregon (ONA’s office is in Tualatin, Oregon. We represent and organize workers across the state.)

Hours and travel: ONA works with healthcare workers who work across the state in 24/7 facilities. By the nature of this work, there are times where travel, working nights, and overnight stays are required.

POSITION OVERVIEW
The Executive Director is employed by the Board of Directors (BOD) as the administrative agent for the Association and its subsidiaries. The Executive Director is responsible for administering the Association’s programs, preserving the fiduciary and legal integrity of the Association, and for carrying out the basic policies established by the Bylaws, the House of Delegates, the Board of Directors, and the ONA/UOUS contract.

The Executive Director is also responsible to each subsidiary’s Board of Directors and the ONA Board of Directors for administering the organization’s programs preserving the fiduciary and legal integrity of each entity.

The Executive Director assumes these major roles: administrator, coordinator, initiator, consultant, facilitator, and leader. Role expectations assume the Executive Director's belief in the basic worth of the individual and the recognition that each individual has valuable contributions to make to the profession, regardless of nationality, race, religion, color, gender, age, veteran status, disability, sexual orientation, education, politics, or position.

EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR ROLE AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Leadership: The Executive Director is responsible to lead the operational and strategic direction of the organization by fostering an environment of trust and cooperation. Works with the BOD to translate the Vision, Mission and Goals into reality. Leads the staff in maintaining a climate of excellence, accountability, and respect.
  • Job Knowledge: Demonstrates knowledge of the missions of the Oregon Nurses Association, Economic & General Welfare Guidelines, American Nurses Association, and American Federation of Teachers. Knowledgeable about union administration, association management, law and regulations pertaining to nonprofits and labor unions.
  • Core Values: Clearly articulates and models ONA’s Values and Mission to the staff, BOD, members, and the community. Leads staff in maintaining a climate of excellence, accountability, and respect. Provides clear and consistent attention to the identity of the organization.
  • Vision: Shares a vision for ONA and inspires visionary thinking and action in others consistent with the Mission. Sees the larger long-range picture; sees where current trends will lead, and how they may influence the organization’s direction; foresees opportunities and trends that will come and go.
  • Professional Integrity: Behaves in an honest, fair, and ethical manner. Respects the confidentiality of information and concerns shared by others. When confronted with ethical dilemmas, acts in a way that reflects relevant law, policy and procedures, association values, and personal values.
  • Communication: Strong and effective communication internally and externally. Delivers constructive feedback in a respectful manner that invites dialogue. Able to respond knowledgeably often without much advance notice regarding a variety of issues related to the nursing profession. Serves as a liaison to the ONA President and spokesperson of ONA, within the parameters identified by the BOD.
  • Continuous Improvement: Seeks, evaluates, and acts upon opportunities for innovation to change, grow and improve. Identifies opportunities and plans for development of such resources.
  • Empowering Others: Empowers the board and staff through appropriate sharing of information and participation in decision making processes. The Executive Director develops leadership skills through delegation and sharing management and decision-making responsibilities. Builds a sense of teamwork and empowerment across functions so that staff are working toward common goals. Delegate’s authority and demonstrates confidence in, and reliance on, others. Also ensures Association’s information technology is managed effectively to maximize its usefulness to staff and members.
  • Community Leadership: Identifies, develops, and maintains the key relationships in the community necessary to support an effective organization. Establishes working relationships with other state and national nurses’ organizations. Coordinate’s efforts to promote nurses and the image of the profession.
  • Management Performance: The Executive Director is ultimately responsible for the overall management of the organization’s programs, operations, and staff to achieve the strategic objectives of the organization. The Executive Director is also responsible for the development of succession planning, talent management, training and developing employees and volunteers to support the achievement of organization’s business objectives.
  • Finance and Resource Management: Manages ONA business relationships including vendor contracts in a fiscally responsible manner. Responsible for working with staff, finance committee and the BOD to prepare budgets, regularly monitor progress, and initiate changes (to operations and/or to budgets), as appropriate. Assures adequate control and accounting of all funds, including maintaining sound financial practices, and complying with all laws. Provides for the maintenance of the organization’s building(s), equipment, and supplies. o Manages and oversees the Association's investments in accordance with guidelines set by the BOD.
  • Philanthropy and Fund Development: Develops, implements, and monitors a realistic, ambitious fundraising plan that includes funding from grants, corporations or sponsorships, special events, and individual and major donors for ONA and its subsidiaries.
  • Governance: Works with the board and full governance structure to develop strategies for achieving the goals and financial viability of the organization. Provides consultation to units, districts, and individual members when appropriate. Facilitates effective use of Association volunteers by ensuring they have adequate and timely information, clear goals and objectives and clear parameters to work within.
  • Public Affairs: Serves as spokesperson along with the ONA President for the Association within parameters identified by the Board of Directors. Provides for ONA representation at local, state, and regional stakeholder and partner groups. Ensures production and quality of all member and public resources publications of the ONA, including electronic social media platforms including but not limited to the Association’s internet web page(s).
  • Supervisory Responsibilities: Manages employees who supervise other employees; is responsible for the overall direction, coordination, and evaluation of these units. Also, directly supervises non-supervisory employees. Supervisor carries out supervisory responsibilities in accordance with the organization's policies and applicable laws. Responsibilities include interviewing, hiring, and training employees; planning, assigning, and directing work; appraising performance; rewarding and disciplining employees; addressing complaints and resolving problems.

DESIRABLE EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:
Any combination of education and experience, which would likely produce the necessary knowledge and abilities, is qualifying.

  • Eligibility for or current RN licensure in Oregon preferred
  • Certified Association Executive or similar designation preferred
  • Minimum Bachelor's degree in Nursing or other health science that would prepare the candidate for the position, advanced degree preferred
  • Five years of work experience in a senior management position in complex organizations requiring management skills and fiscal knowledge and responsibility
  • Excellent communication skills, current knowledge (on cutting edge) of professional issues, including extensive experience with public speaking
  • Commitment to and knowledge of collective bargaining for nurses
  • Ability to travel around the state
  • Willing to travel and accept overnight stays
  • Willing to work flexible hours

COMPENSATION AND BENEFITS:
This is a full time, exempt position. The salary is based on applicable years of experience applied to the wage scale outlined in associations salary placement policy. $146,506 – 171,802.

There is an exceptional benefits package including employer paid medical, dental, vision, long and short-term disability, life insurance, 401(k) employer match of up to 11%. Plus, annually: 5 weeks’ vacation, 8 personal days, 2 weeks sick time and 10 paid holidays.
